We mourn for Manfred Eigen - The Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and founder of the MPI-BPC died on February 6, 2019 at the age of 91
"We are deeply saddened to inform you that Prof. Dr. Manfred Eigen, Nobel Prize Laureate and founder of the Max-Planck-Institute for Biophysical Chemistry (MPI-BPC) has died. Professor Eigen passed away yesterday at the age of 91.
The Board of Directors and employees of the MPI-BPC are mourning this distinguished scientist of the highest international standing, a visionary colleague and inspirational mentor.
Our sympathy goes to his wife, Dr. Ruthild Oswatitsch-Eigen and his relatives.
His significance as to the foundation and tremendously successful development of the MPI-BPC cannot be overestimated. His vision to establish a new, large institute and to combine therein the different disciplines in order to explore complex life processes by physical, chemical and biological methods, has proven to be an extremely fruitful concept. Manfred Eigen was a godsend for us. His philosophy, to which we still adhere today - almost 50 years after the institute’s foundation - has significantly contributed to the success of our institute. For this we are most grateful to him and we will honor his memory."
