We Make Our Own Luck

Tomorrow I will be an honorary Irish woman and will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a parade, green beer and a corned beef sandwich. The expression, “the luck of the Irish”, got me to thinking about the concept of luck. We can go through life hoping to find the four-leaf clover that will change the trajectory of our business or personal life. We can feel lucky when we get that great job or are accepted into our dream college. I believe there’s more to it than that. There’s a quote that I think says it better than I can - “Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.” We might considers ourselves lucky if we get a good parking spot or win money from a scratch-off lottery ticket, but those are simply good fortunes by chance. We can’t just wish and hope that luck will find us the perfect client or career opportunity. We have the power to make our own luck by working hard, honing our skills, seeking ongoing development, and taking on the projects that others may turn away from. This preparation positions us well when opportunity presents itself. Some might say, “I was in the right place, at the right time.” True. But the preparation was the map that got you to your destination. Do you feel lucky?
