We are looking after me
After many, many years of competitive sport about ten years ago my body began to remind me of all of the stress and turmoil I’d put it through. Now, I’m not talking about your normal early morning aches and pains ( I get those too and can’t seem to do anything these days without complimenting the action with a groan) I mean real discomfort. I say discomfort because pain is subjective and no matter what discomfort my body puts me through, I am appreciative that there are people unfortunately in a far worse place than me, in real pain. So let’s call it discomfort, painful discomfort.?
But after many years of enduring this discomfort, I had my first medical procedure last week; a full knee replacement.? It's not allowing me to be physically fit again but I’m on the right road.
I’m not a pretty sight right now, actually, I’m never a pretty sight but right now I look like a mess.? However, I know I’m one step closer to being physically comfortable again so I’ll take a hit on the vanity chin for now.?
Throughout these many years of physical discomfort, mental discomfort has always walked (limped) beside me. It’s tough, as a once fit sportsman to be constantly questioned by people “What’s wrong with you?”, “Do you need to sit down? Also, not being able to walk distances or stand for long periods has impacted my life personally and professionally.
I’m sure people mean well when they question me, but it drains and it grinds so I’m looking forward to soon being able to cartwheel down the road to deafening applause.
I’ve had the support of my wife, family and friends over the years and they will claim their reward, they deserve it, but I also have to recognise the support of my employer and colleagues. I won’t name the name of my employer, just check out my LinkedIn profile. But despite working remotely based in the back bedroom of my home in a small culdesac in the North East, it's kind of one very large Global office.
It's tough times out there in the professional world and knowing all of those folks have my back (and knee) has made a huge difference in my overall well-being and allowed me to approach my surgery and recovery with a more positive outlook. Knowing that my employer values my health and well-being makes me feel more connected to my workplace and has strengthened my commitment to the company. “Don’t rush back” and “Your health is paramount” are at times better than any painkilling drug, they are priceless words and I am extremely appreciative.
My rehab starts now, with the firm goal to recover completely and then focus on the next chapter of physical health knowing for well that the aforementioned after supporting me. My mental health is great; I am positive and keen to LEAP back into the workplace as soon as possible.
I hope that by sharing this experience, others will recognise the importance of prioritising both physical and mental health in the workplace. These situations can be isolating and overwhelming, but thank you to my colleagues and employer for being a shining example of how you can support employees through difficult times.
