We Will Not Let Hate Win
Roy E. Alston, PhD Major(retired Dallas Police)
Vice President of Security and Public Safety at Christus Health/Veteran
Last nights, shots rang out at the conclusion of a peaceful protest by citizens of Dallas, Texas. These protesters were lawfully executing their Constitutional Rights to express their dissatisfaction over the killing of black men by police in Louisiana and Minnesota earlier this week. The result was 5 law enforcement professionals were targeted and killed by a sniper identified as 25-year-old Micah Xavier Johnson. He served in the Army Reserve from 2009 to 2015, a stint that included a deployment to Afghanistan, according to the Pentagon.
Micah had an agenda and that agenda included hate towards police officers AND the peaceful respectful lawful relationship that the Dallas Police Department has with its entire community.
I urge everyone not to get sidetracked by this incredible tragedy. In order for hate to thrive, hate must divide us and then cause us to defeat each other. This individual attempted to shatter a demonstration of how protests are supposed to be handled in this country by law enforcement and citizens - peacefully and lawfully by citizens; protecting and serving by the police.
I want everyone to know the following:
The Dallas Police Department is a role model for Community Oriented Policing.
The Dallas Police Department will continue to protect the constitutional rights of all citizens.
The Dallas Police Department will continue to build trust, increase police legitimacy and provide public value for all the citizens of Dallas.
The Dallas Police Department and it's officers will not be deterred or distracted from the very important work of policing in the 21st Century.
The Dallas Police Department is comprised of law enforcement professionals dedicated to protecting and serving above all else.
Pundits are already taking positions on what happened and why it happened. HATE HAPPENED! and we dishonor the lives sacrificed by the five fallen law enforcement professionals that ran towards gunfire to protect the lives of citizens by saying anything else.
HATE WANTS AND NEEDS FOR CITIZENS AND THE POLICE TO BE DIVIDED TO ACCOMPLISH IT'S MISSION OF DESTROYING OUR GREAT COMMUNITY AND OUR GREAT COUNTRY.
HATE NEEDS TO DISTRACT US FROM THE IMPORTANT WORK OF BRINGING OUR COMMUNITIES TOGETHER AND OF BRINGING THIS NATION TOGETHER.
So, what specifically do we all have to do now? We must all come together and honor the sacrifice of five amazing police officers. We must all come together and heal our differences. There are communities legitimately hurting. The law enforcement community is legitimately hurting. Together we can heal our hurt and be a nation of hate resilient communities.
Let's all decide right now to send HATE and all it's perpetrators packing.
With all the love my heart can hold I am prayerful that the Dallas Texas community will be stronger, that the Dallas Police Department will be stronger and that this great nation of all of ours will be stronger as a result of this tragedy.

8 年Well stated and shared.

8 年Maybe this horrific crime would not have happened had some journalist confronted President Obama early in his first term and asked him point-blank why he marched and shared a podium in 2007 with the New Black Panther Party AFTER their call to kill cops. Until that happens, I worry that there are those out there who would act as if his silence gives them free rein to commit further terrorist activities (up to and including, God Forbid, political assassination).

8 年100% agree with what you said and how you said it. Thank you Roy E. Alston, PhD. Dallas did not deserve this, but they will continue to set a prime example of how things should be handled.

8 年. . The sound of a mother crying over her dead child is the same for every race, creed and color. And when we realize this, maybe something will change. Last week was a hard week for the United States. And it requires that we not default to hate and further divisiveness. Thank you for the repost, Eric Emmanuele, IAAI-CFI .

8 年so agree. Hate does nothing to make things better. All lives matter and we must continue to show support for our men and women in blue.
