Named in honor of United States Navy Petty Officer Third Class Ginger Miller
Navy Petty Officer Third Class Ginger Miller, 2013 White House Champion for Change, Founder and CEO of Women Veterans Interactive, was born and raised in Hempstead, New York. In 1988, she enlisted in the Navy and was stationed at Naval Station Annapolis, Maryland and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In 2009, after experiencing homelessness with her family, as well as caring for her husband a service disabled veteran who experienced Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Mrs. Miller decided to form the nonprofit organization John 14:2, Inc. to address issues surrounding veteran homelessness. “I made a promise to myself after experiencing homelessness…that once I got on my feet I would dedicate my life to supporting Veterans,” Mrs. Miller explained.
The core mission of John 14:2, Inc. is to assist military Veterans and their families experiencing homelessness, substance abuse, and mental illness to reintegrate back into the community, retain permanent housing, maintain sobriety, and regain their pride, dignity, and most of all, hope. In 2011, Mrs. Miller started Women Veterans Interactive, a division of John 14:2, Inc. that is dedicated to serving and supporting women Veterans while meeting them at their points of need. In March 2012, Women Veterans Interactive received a Governor’s Citation from Governor O’Malley for the dedication and service to women Veterans. Since the inception of Women Veterans Interactive, the organization has supported over 1500 women Veterans through outreach and support services.
Mrs. Miller currently serves on the Committee for Minority Veterans at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and previously served as the Chairwoman of the Prince George’s County Commission for Veterans, the Maryland Commission for Women, the Maryland Caregivers Support Coordinating Council and the Maryland Veterans Resiliency Alliance.
When asked in an interview what assets Mrs. Miller felt women Veterans could bring to their communities, she responded, "Women Veterans bring versatility to their communities as outstanding leaders at every level; we are team players, hard workers, critical thinkers, visionaries and fast learners who have the capabilities to quickly and easily adapt to any environment.” We hope WCC’s Ginger will possess the many outstanding characteristics of her namesake United States Navy Petty Officer Third Class Ginger Miller, as well as female Veterans throughout our nation.
