We are not here for the small talk

We are not here for the small talk

‘Now or never’ is an expression often used to stress the urgency of certain topics, but is it really this distinct? Do we really only have two choices, especially when it comes to the climate crisis? Yes and no. We are indeed at a crossroads at this point in time, but the reality is that we only have one choice, and that is to act now! The alternative is not a choice, it’s an inevitability. It’s a reality where human-life, all forms of life really, cease to exist. Climate change is getting worse by the minute and the consequences are no longer an expectation or a guess but a truth that unravels in front of our eyes every day.

Glaciers all over the world are shrinking more quickly than previously thought with implications for more than one billion people who rely on the ice for water, power and food.

Efforts need to be focused on one goal, especially by major greenhouse gas emitters, to slash carbon pollution this decade, in a bid to stick to the 1.5C warming ceiling and minimize harm to people and the planet. The use of energy represents by far the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions with about two thirds of the emissions linked to burning fossil fuels for energy to be used for heating, electricity, transport and industry.

The climate crisis is already wrecking the lives of millions of people, and those who did the least to cause the problem are the worst affected. Energy transition is detrimental to this fight but every one of us has a role to play because we are all responsible. The industry leaders cannot do it alone. Governments cannot do it alone. Activists cannot do alone. Individuals cannot do it alone. We are all in it together and we can only succeed when we assess the pressing challenges of today and take action together.

This is what we are doing at the MEA Energy Week, where we will have bold discussions and debates with everyone from ministers and CEOs to young climate activists and influential public figures. We strongly believe that this diversity of opinions, backgrounds and views is needed to move forward and make an impact. Is the tyrant who control the CCP attending your Middle East propaganda sessions? How about the thug that controls Russia? How about India? They wont do net zero till 2070. The worlds largest emitters above simply dont care . Why not? Is it possible they have a more scientific approach to climate change? A recognition that models are simply that. Models. Trying to work up hysteria and fear , especially among the young, is unconscionable. Terrified people can’t think, they yield up their rights and choices to the political classes ‘solutions’. Solutions that only ever seem to increase power in less and less hands. I suggest you drop emotive lines like ‘we can see climate changing by the minute’. You embarrass yourself sir. Give me science based on facts, not ‘democracy’. Science not funded by political agendas financing outcomes the political class wants. I have a business partner who is 79. He told me after visiting the Fox glacier in New Zealand. Sure it’s expanded and contracted over the years, but it’s where it was in 1960. Not everyone is fool Sir.
