Are we heading towards a big gig economy?

Social Selling has existed since people started selling on social media. None of these apps started off selling (as an app feature) on social media but these social media channels became big enough for people to start selling on them. Now there are apps which allow you to merge all your social media accounts in place and drive traffic to your store. Also, they allow you to buy from them. Interesting, right? 

I believe social selling is just another version of multilevel marketing because these apps allow the sellers to earn and earn themselves in the process through advertisements as well as per sale commission. But isn't MLM already dead? So why are these apps trying to replicate a model which hasn't been very successful of late! Or are they improving MLM so that Robert Kiyosaki's thought of MLM being a 21st-century business comes true? These apps are actually tackling the problems with MLM or Network Marketing with robust technology and without the need to oversell.

The biggest problem with most network marketers is that they are trying to oversell and in the process lose the trust of their customers. You are essentially eliminating this via apps because you are either speaking through pictures or videos.

Now what makes it even more interesting is that it's also allowing these sellers to become active social media users on other platforms other than the social selling app. For most sellers, it acts as an incentive because they are potentially earning from each one of these platforms. 

But are we going to reach a point where it all seems like a pyramid scheme again? Or is the world heading toward a big gig economy that will be able to support more entrepreneurs/freelancers as desk jobs become more and more redundant, education becomes cheaper and changing careers is not a far fetched thought?
