We have a leadership crisis!

This Museum situation is really getting on my nerves!

(Disclaimer: Both my parents worked at the Museum, my father, Alfred Cherutich was the first African Curator of the Kitale Museum (known as the Stoneham Museum then so I do have an attachment to many museums across the country)

I know that when leaders don't preserve the cultural, historical, and natural assets of a community, they fail to invest in maintaining a sense of identity and continuity for the community, and it struck me really hard walking through this bare grounds that was one time a bounty of flowers, squirrels, tortoise, birds and butterflies. Now more than ever I realise that when we allow our leaders to let go of our heritage; we are in fact going to lose a lot more than just the physical structures.

A few thoughts:

Loss of identity: Heritage is closely tied to a community's identity, and without it, people lose their sense of who they are and where they come from. The Museum is a preserve of us, our culture, our history, our people!

Destruction of cultural and historical sites: It begins with one and just rolls over: historic buildings, cultural landmarks, and other significant sites will also be destroyed or neglected.

Loss of tourism revenue: Heritage sites often draw tourists, both local and international and the of revenue is visible, perhaps the Museums needs to change how local museums collections are handled, and to let the revenue stay within the museums.

Disregard for environmental conservation: Natural heritage, such as parks, wildlife reserves, and other protected areas, can be threatened when leaders don't prioritize conservation efforts.

Disregard for community values: Heritage is often tied to the values and traditions of a community, we must preserve our values.

In conclusion, preserving heritage is essential for maintaining a sense of identity and continuity for a community and the local economy. When leaders fail to preserve heritage, it can have negative consequences for both the community and the wider society.

Who will save our heritage?

Philosophicaly if you want to measure how advanced a civilization is, visit their public toilets, museums and jails. For now we lack the capacity to manage. We have vision to build but management is the issue. But we are improving day by day.

This is disheartening to even think about. I was raised in Kitale and seeing our heritage become a shadow of itself is so sad. This is a result of poor leadership and ignorance. Our heritage must be preserved!
