Are We Getting Enough Exercise?

Now that we are on top of Covid-19, it's time to attend to the secondary issues surrounding the pandemic and nip them in the bud before they cause major issues.
One of these issues is the reduced amount of daily movement we have faced by working from home. The common term used for this is Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT).
- Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) is the energy expended for everything we do that is not sleeping, eating or sports-like exercise. It ranges from the energy expended walking to work, typing, performing yard work, undertaking agricultural tasks and fidgeting.
Many office staff are missing out on extra energy expenditure related to workplace activity we once had e.g walking between meetings, desks, lunch halls etc...
Add sitting in front of our computers and Zoom meetings all day, if we do not improve our daily routines, desk workers are on a crash course to long term injury and chronic pain caused by makeshift workstations and a lack of appropriate movement.

How much exercise do you need?
- Australia's national exercise guidelines (yes, the government has done the work for us) suggest "accumulating 150 to 300 minutes of "moderate-intensity" physical activity, or 75 to 150 minutes of "vigorous-intensity" physical activity, each week (or an equivalent combination of both)"
- Try one of our free Physiotherapy Core Sessions comprising of a 20 minute light workout with a 10-minute desk stretch here
Now that we can travel beyond our immediate suburbs, think of some creative ways that you, your family and your team can get moving this weekend!
