Will Artificial Intelligence Change Our Behavior? It Does Not Have To.

We Are Geniuses and Idiots at the Same Time: A Historical Perspective

Throughout history, technology has served both as a catalyst for monumental societal changes and as a reflection of human aspirations and fears. From agricultural innovations that settled nomadic tribes to the rise of digital technologies that connected the globe, each technological advancement has reshaped the course of human development, as my partner at Haltia.AI Arto Bendiken wrote so eloquently in his open letter that replied to Marc Andreessen techno optimist manifesto. This narrative also holds true for the Industrial Revolution, nuclear power, and now, AI, each initially met with skepticism but later recognized for their significant contributions to progress.

Retail Experiences Improve With AI

The Agricultural Revolution: 10,000 B.C.

The dawn of agriculture around 10,000 B.C. marked one of humanity's first significant technological leaps, enabling nomadic groups to form stable agricultural communities. This development allowed for increased food production, supporting population growth and the rise of complex societies.

From farm to plate in the shortest time is the way forward.

The Printing Revolution: 1440

My colleague Steve Cobb, senior ethicist, reminds us in his manifesto #RightToCompute that in 1440, Johannes Gutenberg's invention of the printing press revolutionized the dissemination of knowledge, making books accessible and affordable, thus fueling the Renaissance, the Scientific Revolution, and the Enlightenment. This era significantly shaped the intellectual landscape of Europe and beyond. The Minister of AI in the UAE, points out that it could have been one of the biggest mistakes of the Muslim world for not adopting the technology sooner rather than later.

The Industrial Revolution: 18th Century

The Industrial Revolution, which began in the mid-18th century, was initially viewed with ambivalence due to the displacement of traditional craftspeople and harsh working conditions in factories. However, in retrospect, it is recognized for drastically improving production capabilities and skyrocketing economic growth that enabled numerous societal advances.

The Emergence of Nuclear Power: Mid-20th Century

Similarly, nuclear power was not initially embraced, associated primarily with its destructive capabilities in war. Over time, however, it has become a critical component of the world's clean energy strategy, illustrating a dramatic shift from its original perception to a cornerstone of sustainable development.

The Digital Age: 20th Century Onwards

The digital revolution has transformed every aspect of society, making information more accessible and facilitating global communication. Innovations such as ARPANET in 1969 and the World Wide Web in 1991 have created unprecedented connectivity, redefining how we live, work, and interact.

The Rise of Artificial Intelligence: Late 20th Century Onwards

Artificial intelligence (AI), which began its development in earnest in the mid-20th century, has only recently captured the public's imagination. Similar to nuclear power, the benefits of AI are often overshadowed by fears and misconceptions. Misinformation and forgetfulness. Despite this, AI has already shown significant promise, particularly in healthcare where it aids in diagnostic processes, research, data analytics, personalized medicine, saving lives and streamlining administrative tasks without human error. As though that is not enough, AI technologies have also transformed industries by optimizing logistics, enhancing manufacturing processes, and personalizing customer experiences in the retail sector. As AI continues to evolve, its potential to significantly benefit society across multiple domains becomes increasingly apparent.

Dubai Circa 2050

The trajectory of technological development - from initial skepticism to later recognition of its value - from idiocy to genius to idiocy - highlights the complex relationship humanity often has with innovation. Not recognizing our past mistakes will always result in our idiotic decisions that do not take our past mistakes into consideration. As we continue to navigate the complexities and opportunities presented by new technologies such as AI, it is crucial to approach them with a balanced perspective, with a sense of learning from our own admitted mistakes, ensuring they align with broader societal goals and ethical standards. We were not effective in the rollout of the web, social media, nuclear power and so much more. We made mistakes. The aha moments are documented. Will we ever learn? Or do we choose not to by design? By guiding and supporting technological development thoughtfully, we can harness its potential to provide dignity, tolerance, unity, and abundance for our collective future, echoing historian Melvin Kranzberg's reminder that "Technology is neither good nor bad; nor is it neutral."
