We are the future of energy

Matthew Charleston is one of our many #Yurika team members working out in the field. He's leading the charge of our expansion into the Northern Territory and looking for some team mates! Learn more about the work Matthew enjoys and why he'd recommend a career with Yurika ...

How did you get your start in the industry and what are some of the important lessons you’ve learnt along the way?

I began my career in 2004 at Testing and Certification Australia, where I contributed to a project involving the removal of Zellweger relays and worked on Type 5 upgrades for the first interval meters. I then spent 12 years as an Electrical Technician at Country Energy and then Essential Energy in country NSW, doing everything from meter changes, service replacements, line work, field switching and anything else you do in a small country depot.

I have learnt a lot while working in these varied roles, but most important is to always look out for your mates and be prepared to call things out. Before doing something - stand back and slow down, there might be a better or safer way to do the job.

What excites you about the future of energy - and Yurika’s role in it?

One aspect that particularly interests me is the opportunity to work with new technologies. It's fascinating to see how these innovations are transforming the power industry and enabling power workers to develop diverse skill sets. This evolution allows us to stay up to date with new and safer methods of working on the network. Contributing to this positive change and being part of a team that drives advancements in the energy sector is great.?

What are some of the key projects you’re working on??

My role is based permanently in Darwin, which is a new expansion for Yurika. We’re looking for more field crews to join us in Darwin, where we’re currently working on a significant meter upgrade project.

What are the opportunities and challenges you see in the energy industry?

There are so many opportunities to work more efficiently, enabling field workers to have long-lasting careers. However, one of the key challenges lies in keeping good, experienced staff on the ground, and training new apprentices for the future. As the industry evolves, it demands field workers to swiftly acquire new skills and adapt to changes. Embracing these changes and being able to learn new skills quickly are crucial aspects in addressing the challenges and seizing the opportunities within the energy industry.

How are you/Yurika supporting customers, community and industry in the energy transition?

At Yurika, we are committed to supporting customers, communities, and the industry throughout the energy transition. One of the ways we achieve this is by promoting awareness of the significant benefits that technology brings to our industry. We engage with customers, discussing the advantages of new technologies such as advanced meters, as well as improved fault protection and reporting tools. By providing information and guidance, we help customers understand how they can benefit from these advancements in their electricity usage. Our aim is to foster a collaborative environment where customers, communities, and the industry as a whole can thrive during this energy transition.

What do you enjoy about living and working in Darwin??

Living and working in Darwin is great! The best part is the freedom you get in the NT. There's so much open space around, and it's a breath of fresh air compared to the hustle and bustle of the city. The laid-back lifestyle here means you can take it easy and enjoy a relaxed pace of life. The weather is great (at least in the dry season!).

Another thing I love about Darwin is the opportunities it offers for me and my family, but the best part is the people. Everybody in Darwin has a relaxed attitude and we all enjoy our socialising.

What’s your advice to anyone considering a career with Yurika?

I have loved working in the power industry in so many varied roles. Yurika is now working Australia wide on plenty of exciting projects, so it’s a really exciting time to get into new and emerging work. I really enjoy the work life balance and working within a large and knowledgeable team.
