We are Favor: Amanda

At Favor, we believe careers are a journey, not a destination. In this series, we’re celebrating our team members and the unique paths that led them to Favor.?

We recently caught up with Senior Account Executive Amanda Going to get her take on the key to success in sales, the best career advice she’s received, and what she loves about working with her local restaurant community (hint: it’s a foodie’s dream job).

Tell us about how you landed at Favor.

I graduated with a degree in strategic communications (advertising/PR) from Texas Christian University in 2014 and felt open to anything. After a brief stint as a social media coordinator (I couldn’t hack it!), I cut my teeth in sales doing outside B2B sales for AT&T. It was grueling, but the wins made the grind addictive. I then spent many years as a recruiter, which was equal parts thrilling and challenging. I finally found my way back to sales. It eventually clicked for me that just because you “can” sell something doesn’t mean you should. For me, I have to be selling a product or service I believe in—and Favor is certainly that!

What is your favorite part about being on the Sales team?

Not kidding, my favorite thing to do is go out to eat and explore foodie experiences. I’ve always been obsessed with restaurants and being “in the know” about the food and drink scene wherever I am. Chatting with the vibrant and dynamic restaurant community and providing a helpful service is fun. Working in sales for Favor is a “pinch me” moment. I make my own schedule, I get to meet cool people, and I always know what’s new, what’s hot, and where we should eat.

Have you always wanted to work in sales? What was your dream job as a kid?

Growing up a talkative, nosy, and extroverted kid, people would always say one of two things: “She needs to do theater” (I did) or “She should go into sales.” My dad made his career in sales roles, so maybe I come by it naturally. As a kid, I was wholeheartedly focused on being a kid, so my dream job back then was probably “froyo shop worker” (I did that too—dream achieved!) or “international star of the stage and screen.”

What advice would you give someone who wants to advance their career in tech?

I’m in the tech industry basically by accident, so let’s just put that out there. I consider myself more in the sales industry, or maybe even the restaurant/hospitality industry. Regardless, here’s my sage advice for whatever you’re doing: Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. You’ll never regret being over-prepared. Or being early. The best piece of advice I’ve been given was: “Learn to love to win more than you hate to lose.” Oh, and of course, the old adage that I only understood once I worked at Favor: “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

What’s a fun fact about yourself most coworkers don’t know?

I studied abroad in Sevilla, Spain for a semester in college!
