We failed you.

We failed you.

It is haunting, traumatic, heartbreaking… All over again. Images such as these shake us to the ground and back.

And yet, it is just a snapshot.

Exceptional moment that drags our attention away from our daily lives and concerns. It wakes up our empathy for some hours, maybe days. Our empathy that just like adrenaline, goes high and then fades away, leaving emptiness and tiredness. Ignorance.

It is a snapshot. It brings anger and rage that we keep inside, but that falls short of being transformative.

It is a snapshot because we look at it all enraged and disturbed, and yet we keep our eyes and ears closed on all the suffering that came before and that will come after for those kids, parents, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers who run, lift, cross, walk, hide, fall, kiss, rise, hug, work, dig, swim... drown.

It is a snapshot of human battle against other humans. Of those in desperate need that went for extreme measures, on behalf of hope. A battle of humans crossing seemingly natural obstacles that carry strong human fingerprint, stamped and marked in blood. We placed those obstacles, none else.

Every few years we get a snapshot like this. The way we act we should expect them to become more frequent. We will frame them and place them on a shelf in our minds where they will turn invisible, covered by dust and photos of our last journey from some exotic destinations. Or our smiling families.

We failed them, we failed us.

We failed you, Angie Valeria.

Hvala ti sto si ovo napisao?i podelio.

It is really sad. I know most of us are not engaged in any way to these kind of problems, and the people that are, are definitely not enough, or have very little power to make a difference. And the saddest part, is that the people in power, who can actually do something to help, do quite the opposite or decide to not look at the problem, or simply blame someone else for it.? Mexico has been a transit country for many years, and it will be for many more. We, as Mexicans, have to change the way we see central and south American migrants; most of the people see them as lazy people that? do not want to work in their home countries, or criminals that want to continue with their criminal lives elsewhere. We do not see struggling people that are running away from criminal gangs, murder threats towards them and their family members, or just people that have to go somewhere else to get a job because their countries are cannot give everybody a decent job.? We Mexicans care for the Mexicans that flee their homeland to go to the US because "there are not enough opportunities here", and we get mad if they are mistreated or abused by the US Border Patrol. The main problem begins with our mentality, with our hypocrisy. We are all part of that problem, and that is the saddest part.?
