We are evolving and will continue to evolve
This article is a of a sensitive nature, it should not be, but it is.
The World has changed, it has evolved and times are different from what many of us knew growing up. I am sure this has been the case for every generation coming through the ages.
Many moons ago the Government promoted smoking and it was actually seen as a health benefit at one point and now look at us….smoking is banned and heavily taxed and we all know how bad it is for our health. Sugar has been thrown into our food and drink for many years, now our Government have introduced sugar tax and we are being re-educated on how to eat more healthily.
What is the point in all this chat? Well, have also noticed that we have become a generation of online reviewers and cast judgement over other peoples opinions (I too have been guilty of this). What is seen as right and what is seen as wrong is very clear when I read the various articles and quotes on social media channels. We have all become very vocal and very judgemental around everything and anything from environmental issues, politics, living life, health, raising children and recently there seems to be a focus on leadership.
I see many “inspirational” quotes being posted on leadership and what is deemed as right and wrong, these often followed by comments slating “poor” leadership. I have started to put some real thought into this and thought I would throw my tuppence worth in…..
What we now see as good leadership is something new, something many businesses are striving towards but still learning about. Leadership has evolved and is evolving. What we are now slating in terms of poor leadership used to be the norm, these so called poor leaders were trained and developed and brain washed into behaviours that once were deemed acceptable. Perhaps in 20 years time, the next generation will be on a new platform all slating what we now see as great leadership.
Good leadership is common sense and treating others as you wish to be treated yourself. Good leadership is having a style that can change to suit the individuals you are leading. Not everyone is the same. Some people will thrive in a flexible working environment whilst others will sink. Some people will love being set objectives and then left to achieve them whilst others will stress and need help and direction. Good leadership is not about guaranteeing your staff a job for life……some people would just quite frankly take the p**s! Good leaders do need to worry about the numbers as without the numbers there is no business. However, putting numbers before good committed people is short sighted. It is all common sense!
Everyone is different and need different styles of leadership to help them progress. As long as they know they are cared about and nurtured, listened to and treated fairly then surely that is the most important thing?
It seems we are too quick to blame others when perhaps we should take a hard look at ourselves?
Focus on you, focus on your career, focus on your family and stop worrying about others. What you deemed acceptable years ago is very different to what is deemed as acceptable now and what you deem as acceptable now, will probably not be acceptable in years to come. It is easy to blame, it is easy to go online and post quotes or join in on bashing certain types of people.
But things will evolve and keep on evolving. Focus on you.
