Summary: One summer after returning home from?visiting my son and family. The idea of re-starting a skincare line appeared in a dream. I was thinking about how to maneuver through the downturn in the economy. After twenty-six years, in the communications industry, I retired in May of 2009 and promised myself, I would never walk inside a corporation's doors again trading my valuable time for dollars. My retirement package with a bonus helped me keep that promise. Now, after fourteen years, I found myself needing extra income to get by. Not because I had no money, but to keep from spending my savings, and then needing assistance. I began writing down recipes, subscribing to natural organic sites to gain current information about the natural cosmetics industry, and buying books. The next thing I did was go online to visit natural organic vendors and choose the ingredients that would make up the first whipped body butter cream.
The Back Story
My life was abruptly disrupted on October 17, 2019. I emptied my bank accounts and packed my car, till nothing else could be jammed inside. My loving son offered to pay and have it transported to my new destination. I boarded my plane for the long eight-hour flight that had a three-hour layover in St. Louis, (Geez, that's a workday). I would live temporarily with my daughter and grandson. The idea was to buy a house or rent an apartment. I always heard North Carolina had affordable housing and I would do good there. So, I thought. This was the time of the people's #1 enemy, COVID-19, and did it wreak havoc. Hospitals were overrun and many people were sick and dying. Entire cities shut down, business closures, schools were put on hiatus, and children were quarantined for distance learning, and parents had to leave their jobs; it was a blessing if two parents worked. One could stay home with the children, yet it was disastrous for single-parent households, who more than likely lost their income because they had to stay with the child or children. Well, unfortunately, my plans went out the window along with the vaccine.
The cities and businesses opened and things were kind of getting back to normal, or were they? I went from middle-class income, to not even qualifying for low-income housing, without a voucher. It has been two years and four months, and I am still waiting for a voucher appointment. I could no longer wait on the gov. I had to do something to earn income.
The First Completed Product:
The products were stored in the garage in boxes. I sorted out the ingredients needed, brought them into the kitchen, and went to work, experimenting and writing down every step. My first try was a bust, the second attempt was the same. It's OK, I told myself. I adjusted the recipe, and this time it will work. Noooo! Feeling frustrated, I sat down tapping my pen on the table while beating myself up, almost resulting in a migraine. Why isn't this working? I know these are the formulas I used before. I wished I had my notebook of recipes, from when I owned my first skincare company, Shimmer's Natural Bath & Body. Never trust your mind to remember important things when you are 50Plus and Beautiful. I estimated at least a gallon of products costing over $200 was wasted.
Nothing Beats a Loss, Except a Win
Failing forward and pushing doubt out of the way, I configured a marketable whipped body butter cream. I chose to make it unscented to lessen waste. (I've made bug spray in the past), and did not want to risk spoiling the cream. I sent out a call for 25 volunteers to beta-test the product. A flood of emotions rose through tears, smiles, out loud laughter, a fist punch in the air, and a loud YES!
1. "I love your buttercream. Let me know when it's ready to buy."
2. "The cream is very moisturizing and great for my feet, hands, and cuticles."
3. "The cream is really good, WOW! It took away the itchiness I have been dealing with forever," and so on. Until all 25 reviews came back, telling me how the cream benefitted their skin, and not one was negative. I am still riding that roller coaster and loving every minute of it.
My Master Plan:
Create An Organic Pool of Luxurious Skin Loving, Plant-Based, Anti-Aging Moisturizers to Assist the Biological Makeup of Our Largest Organ, the Skin.
Our Name:
The name ShaNuWater came to me while I was taking a creative writing class.?Once upon a time in the realm of ancients lived the wife of a man who died. She was instructed to dip his body into the Shanute pond, formed from the flowing waters atop the snow-capped mountains. When she did, his body became whole, and as I reflected on the story I thought of the regenerating effects of water, and how without it nothing would grow or survive. I then began tossing the idea around in my head, what are in creams and lotions that help our skin stay moisturized and give it a youthful appearance; a new sense of rejuvenation and vitality? Humectants attract water - healing water.?Hence, the name ShaNuWater Fountain of Youth was born.?
