“Why do we need to invest so much in Leadership Training?” is a frequently asked question in many organizations. While the number of organizations investing in harnessing the potential of their people is on the rise, we still have this question surfacing in many forums.
My answer to that would be the fascinating “Peter Principle”. Formulated by Laurence J Peter, this principle states that the selection of an employee for a position is based on his performance in the current role rather than on abilities relevant to the intended role. A person who shows prowess in a junior level role may not necessarily be successful in a managerial role with added responsibilities and handling a team. Most organizations view Leadership Training with a knee jerk response- “He is terrible at handling the demands of his team”, “He needs to know when to be assertive”, “She is unable to delegate and prioritize critical projects”..and so on. However, these are rarely the critical success factors that determined his performance in the previous role. How can it then be assumed that the individual would give the same stellar performance in the new role without any exposure to these concepts?
What works is training potential leaders well in advance and continuing to foster their leadership growth at intervals. This helps build a strong confident leadership pipeline rather than a set of stressed out demoralized managers to steer organizational growth.
