We Don’t Have to Lead to Make a Difference

The past few days have been a powerful reminder of how important it is for us to show up for each other, especially when times get tough. We often feel the pressure to be the ones making things happen—to be in charge, to lead. But the truth is, sometimes life puts us in a place where leading isn’t possible. And that’s okay. Because even when we’re not leading, we can still make a real difference by supporting those who are.

This past week at the Salesian Family Youth Center in Los Angeles has been eye-opening. Our focus shifted toward supporting organizations on the frontlines, helping people impacted by the devastating fires. I can’t say enough about how grateful I am for Luis Chacon , who has been leading these efforts with so much heart. His commitment to helping others has inspired all of us to step in where we can.

One moment that really stood out was when we partnered with A Place For Youth . They were collecting food and clothing to send to families affected by the fires. Our young people rolled up their sleeves and helped pack and organize donations. It wasn’t glamorous work, but it mattered. It reminded me how powerful it is when we simply show up and lend a hand.

Another moment that warmed my heart was when the Girl Scout Troop wanted to do something for our local heroes—the firefighters risking their lives on the frontlines. We joined them in delivering water, snacks, and other supplies to fire stations. It wasn’t a grand gesture compered to others, but it was meaningful. It was our way of saying, “We see you. We’re with you.”

Reflecting on these moments, I realize that making a difference doesn’t always mean being in charge. It means recognizing when others need support and stepping up to help. That’s how real change happens—through collective effort, through kindness, through community.

Beyond responding to the fires, we’ve also been visiting homeless youth in Los Angeles. That work has deeply touched us. It’s a harsh reminder that there are so many people in our city who need compassion and support. It’s moving us to think harder about how we can create a more caring and inclusive community.

Los Angeles is facing a lot right now. But even in the midst of these challenges, it’s been amazing to witness people coming together. Our youth, community leaders, and volunteers are showing that when we unite, we’re stronger.

So, to Luis Chacon and Miriam Hernandez thank you. Thank you for your selfless dedication and for showing our young people what it means to make a difference. Your leadership is inspiring.

At the end of the day, we don’t need to be in charge to help. We just need to care enough to step up. And when we do, we become part of something bigger than ourselves—a community that lifts each other up.

Let’s keep showing up. Let’s keep lending a hand. Let’s keep making a difference, together.
