WE DO BANG ON ABOUT SCHOOLS, AND CRIME.

If we are accused of banging on about the role of Police and schools, we plead guilty as charged.
The reason is two irrefutable facts.
Firstly, all, and we mean every one of the juvenile miscreants who are terrorising our community, go through the education/schools system.
Non-attendance is the first indicator of those children who need special attention.
So it is without apology that we push for that being the place to start, ground zero of criminality, and the Police must play a critical role in this.
After much criticism of VicPol by us and others of the lack of a Police in Schools Program (PSIP), a quasi-Police Schools program was introduced. This role was added to the commitments of police, who were already overloaded. And it is the next best thing to useless in this fight. It is unfair to the members and has extremely low effectiveness in the crime fight.
The reason this pretend program won’t work is that by its nature,

1 个月Police are often accused of being distant or never seen up close to interact with the community (school kids too) that they are there to protect. The Police in Schools Program (PSIP) back in the days when it had dedicated police assigned to the program worked. It was proven to ‘break the ice’ between police and impressionable kids, through two way communications, trust and information sharing, many young people chose a crime free life. Todays resource strapped police, unfilled vacancies, and overloaded with calls to attend, will never find the time to service their local schools unless under a structured program. With many retired police willing and capable to bridge the resource gap, why hasn’t this option been embraced? Ask your local members of Parliament.
