We Didn’t Have To - But We Chose To: Navigating ESG Together

We Didn’t Have To - But We Chose To: Navigating ESG Together

Who in their right mind writes a report they don't have to? Well, we did - think of it as jumping into the deep end of the sustainability pool without armbands. Stressful? Absolutely. Guidance? About as clear as the M50 Northbound on a Friday afternoon. But with everyone in the industry trying to read the ESG map upside down, we figured we'd blaze a trail, even if we had to hack through the paperwork jungle ourselves.

Sustainability in construction is changing rapidly, and for many contractors and developers, it’s a minefield of new regulations, compliance deadlines, and endless paperwork. But here’s the thing: nobody has this all figured out just yet. Across the industry, from suppliers to developers, we’re all navigating new terrain together, learning on the job and trying to make sense of it all.?

That’s why we decided to get stuck in. While we’re not required to produce an ESG report, we knew it could make a real difference for our clients. They’re the ones under intense scrutiny, tasked with mapping out supply chains, demonstrating transparency, and meeting new sustainability goals. By stepping up, we’ve aimed to take a bit of weight off their shoulders and show what’s happening deeper in the supply chain.

It’s Not Just Red Tape

For most, sustainability reporting feels like learning a foreign language while trying to pass an exam. It’s technical, time-consuming, and often overwhelming. One of the biggest hurdles is sourcing accurate data beyond immediate suppliers. That’s why we put our own cards on the table - breaking down our emissions and tracking our environmental impact, not just to meet targets but to give others the information they need to succeed.

Take emissions as an example. This year, we tracked Scope 3 emissions for the first time. These account for indirect emissions, such as the production of materials like steel. Steel alone made up 87% of our emissions. Sobering? Absolutely. But it’s also a roadmap for change. With this knowledge, we can work with suppliers to refine processes, explore lower-carbon options, and make meaningful reductions.

Aligning with Client Sustainability Goals: ESG and CSRD Reporting

Operating within a supply chain where sustainability is no longer optional, we recognise that many of our clients bear the responsibility for Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) compliance. These rigorous requirements demand transparency and accountability in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices, and we are committed to playing our part.

As EcoMerit certified partners, we’ve taken deliberate steps to integrate sustainability into our operations. Our current work on a voluntary ESG report, set for completion in 2024, reflects our proactive approach to aligning with evolving industry expectations. For our top clients—many of whom face CSRD reporting obligations—this report is designed to support their compliance efforts by providing robust, verifiable data on our own environmental and social impact.

The EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) plays a key role in addressing ‘carbon leakage,’ where carbon-intensive production shifts to countries with weaker climate policies. CBAM ensures that imported goods reflect the same carbon price as EU-made products, supporting fair competition while encouraging cleaner production globally. Set for full implementation in 2026, CBAM is aligned with the EU’s Emissions Trading System, gradually phasing out free allowances to help decarbonise European industry.

By working alongside our clients, we aim to ensure that their projects not only meet regulatory benchmarks but also contribute to a broader vision of sustainable development. Collaborating in this way enables us to navigate the complexities of ESG and CSRD together, fostering a supply chain that’s as accountable as it is resilient.

The Real Work Is Done by People

The sustainability journey isn’t just about compliance frameworks or glossy reports. Behind every line of data is a person - someone in an office, a factory, or on-site - figuring out how to gather and process the numbers. For many of us, this feels like uncharted waters, with no guidebook and no safety net.

The human element is what drives progress. Whether it’s an engineer calculating embedded carbon, a site manager implementing circular economy practices, or a supplier reducing packaging waste, it’s the collective effort that pushes us forward. Sharing data is one way we can help lighten the load - because when one part of the supply chain steps up, it benefits the entire industry.

Building for the Future

This isn’t just about meeting the rules of today; it’s about setting a foundation for tomorrow. Circular economy principles, zero-landfill ambitions, and long-lasting materials like galvanised steel are just a few pieces of the puzzle. But sustainability isn’t just about materials - it’s about people. Upskilling teams, supporting biodiversity, and fostering trust between partners all contribute to meaningful progress.

GHG Emissions Transparency: Since 2018, Irish Fencing has tracked Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, achieving year-on-year reductions in Scope 1 and 2 emissions while increasing turnover by 72%. Our new solar PV array is set to deliver even greater carbon savings.

Circular Economy Leadership: Over 95% of our products are galvanised, lasting 40–50 years and fully recyclable at end-of-life, aligning with zero-landfill goals.

Supporting Clients’ Supply Chain Obligations: By proactively calculating Scope 3 emissions and preparing for the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), we offer clarity on how embedded GHG data impacts supply chains.

Community and Workforce Commitments: From biodiversity initiatives, like our 2-hectare forestry plantation, to training staff through the Supply Chain Sustainability School, we’re prioritising both people and the planet.

A Shared Journey

The road to sustainability is anything but smooth, but it’s a journey we’re all taking together. Nobody has all the answers, and the learning curve can feel steep. But that’s the reality of creating change - it’s messy, difficult, and, at times, overwhelming.

By leaning on each other, sharing insights, and being honest about the challenges, we can build something stronger - not just compliant structures but an industry that values collaboration and long-term impact.

For those working through the maze of ESG and sustainability, know this: you’re not alone, and we’re right there with you. Together, we’ll figure it out.
