Are we on the cusp of another Transformation Journey called FinOps?

Recently, I got a chance to read "FinOps eBook: From FinOps to proven cloud cost management and optimization strategies" written by Hystax CEO & Co-Founder Nick S. The book was small (49 pages), but it was thought-provoking and full of practical insights. Every page was worth reading, which can be a trigger for embarking on the FinOps journey.

I got my FinOps Certified Practitioner (FOCP) certification from the FinOps Foundation in July 2023. Thanks to the FinOps Foundation for providing scholarships as well as world-class study materials that helped me understand the foundational concepts of #FinOps. Also, I would like to thank the FinOps Foundation and community for taking several initiatives to promote and help organizations build FinOps culture.

While going through Nick S. FinOps eBook, I kept recollecting a lot of insights that took me back to those days when I was navigating through the concepts of Agile and DevOps. The pointers that I recall from the book, which may translate to some of the below, are:

  • FinOps is a journey, not a one-time activity.
  • FinOps is a continuous improvement process.
  • FinOps is a culture that needs to be built within the team.
  • FinOps requires leadership support to flourish.
  • FinOps is a team game, not an individual's heroic.
  • FinOps requires collaboration and cross-collaboration.
  • FinOps promotes empowering those who work on the ground (Engineers).
  • FinOps recommends starting small and growing later.
  • FinOps promotes transparency, predictability, flexibility, value for money, etc.
  • FinOps recommends constant inspection, measurement, and adaptation.
  • FinOps requires constant & consistent awareness and education.

I am sure many of you might wonder, "Why am I talking about Agile or DevOps transformation?" I felt the same when I was going through it. Many of the terminologies, processes, and approaches are quite similar to what we have seen in any Agile or DevOps transformation, with the only difference being the end goal. Hence, FinOps is a transformation journey with the end goal of effective and efficient cloud cost management.

Stay tuned. I will post more on Agile/DevOps/Cloud/FinOps related topics in the coming days.

#finops #finopstransformation #agile #devops.
