Are we choosing the right database partner

Are we choosing the right database partner

We are all into a digital and technology oriented lifestyle where the data plays a vital role in the business of almost every segment/vertical. Today organization seems to be very focused into their core application /front end look and its features which leads to show less attention to the database side of it.

The increasing and readily available features provided by cloud service providers totally abstracts the real threats at database layer so we are bound to use the database with certain restrictions. When we get much more deep into the operations carried out across at the industry level we could sense that living with the workaround for DB issues is also part of operations and which would result in performance and scalability issues. In cloud environment we automate everything which by default scales up the infra parameters for any kind of performance issues rather than making use of the existing resources completely.

Today everybody wants plug&play solutions for the database requirements so we could see a mass of people migrating to cloud. This is good because we can scale up/ scale down based on the traction of business in market. While we go for the readily available database solutions we should think of choosing the right database partner.

Database is just a platform to store and retrieve data with its own features, ability and limitations. So when we are using the database we should know how exactly to use its features. We have to agree at one point that though database is a common platform, it is used in different ways for different use cases. Replication, Cluster, Group replication, read/write split up, partitioning, load balancer, router, DR, Master/Slave and so on are the different options for different use cases. We should know exactly which options to be picked for the use case with its own Pros and Cons. Moreover any change at the application level would bring a huge impact at database level. If the database is not tuned/managed in such a way to hold on the incoming request and challenges then we loose our focus on the business and end up in searching a solution provider.

Today at the industry level the expectation is "One stop solutions for both infra and database " that is the reason the infra service provides starts bundling the database administration services as a value addition to their business.

While choosing the partner, we need to understand whether database administration and solution providing is also a core business along with the infra services provided. It is also good to have the database solution provider for the database side of any business to avoid the architectural level mishaps and to ensure the smooth running of database. This would allow you to concentrate more on the core business and drive steadily in the market irrespective of the new upcoming technology at database level, Impact due to application and its new feature and so on.

Mydbops, as a database consulting and remote DBA service providing company focusing on MySQL and its technologies have supported many organisations across the globe in choosing the right solutions, setting up the architecture that fits the business use case and helped them to scale up, adopt to the latest technologies in market.

We at Practo were looking for a full time database admin and we met Mydbops team in the process. The decision to consult with Mydbops turned out to be one of the best decisions that we took. Mydbops team spent a week on 3 of our biggest MySQL databases and came up with a lot of suggestions. Once these suggestions were implemented, we gained a lot in our response times as well as more stable databases. Mydbops team has a lot of depth and insights into the working of MySQL and how it needs to be managed. It was a pleasure working with such a technically sound and dedicated team. - Hari Prashanth, Practo.
