WE CANNOT MISS WOOD FOR THE TREES !

WE CANNOT MISS WOOD FOR THE TREES !

I recently came across one interesting issue based on values and emotions, along with some incidents, which equally made an indelible mark on my mind, which I felt relevant to share. Firstly, a doctor, who is expert in surgery, may not able to perform surgery with ace, when the patient is not mere subject to him, rather, his mother, father, sister, brother, wife, children, or close associates of him, as he is mentally or emotionally attached to them. Even to diagnose or administer drugs or injection, he may become nervous or face immense mess. But while dealing with other patients, where these conditions are   absent, and whom he treats as his subjects, he performs well, which reflects his expertise as well his adroitness, for which he is capable to earn fame as well huge wealth. Thus, craving for wealth inanely, trigger him even to dedicate his own life and his own likings as well spending quality time with his close associates. Unfortunately, he became a particle of an existing system, which cruelly exploit him to the fullest and where, he is utter helpless, having no choice, apart from surrendering himself to this system, thus became the worst victim of this system.

In our country, India, we have noticed, how tragedy of wealth and profit has eclipsed him, making medical and health care a sordid profession sometimes, which once considered a noble profession! Of late, we have come across number of incidents, where, people from this health care profession, whether doctors or nurses or paramedics, inadvertently made this profession a disgraceful one, owing to their callous attitudes. We have noticed in our country, a new born baby, mere three months of age has forced to go for amputation of his hand, just because of a tourniquet being used to create a channel for administering saline in his body as the baby was suffering with certain ailment. But, owing to gross negligence of the medical stuffs, his concern hand was infected as they ignored to heed to the consequence of their work. They, not being able to find the vein in the hand of the baby, they eventually made channel to his leg, and virtually forgotten of his hand where they used the tourniquet to remove, resulting to develop gangrene in his hand subsequently. Alas! The baby’s hand eventually being amputated. Besides, we have noticed in numerous cases, that owing to the negligence of the people attached to health care industry, numerous lives are being foiled. Most striking feature we have noticed, that the people engaged in health care industry, have no qualms. Only running after money, as the people, who are the clients, are so helpless, that they are ready to pay anything according to their level best ability, just to ensure the survivality of their close associates, and to ensure more profits, became the principal agenda of the people associated with the medical profession, resulting indignation and abhorrence from the common mass towards them.

Apart from health care, education is also an arena, where we observe same inclinations, which is the basic structure of human values and sentiments and a reflection of a healthy nation are being eclipsed by profits and wealth! Ruining the value system of a society, resulting to engender a generation, devoid of values and ethics and only focusing themselves to mundane luxury and comfort and garnering wealth, failing to achieve which may trigger them to become depressed and frustrated and resort to any unfair means without any qualms. Thus paralyzing the value system in a society and forming an ailing society, brimming with frustration, immersing in addictions and a sizeable section of people  are subjected to anti-social  activities, even fundamentalism and terrorists outfits are thus emerging as a common phenomenon, where this poor people are resorting to. Surprisingly, this lack of values are also paving the wealthy class to foment and funding the groups entangled with such activities too!

Now the pertinent question, which haunts us, that, we all are mortals and we all are living on the legacy, being cultivated by our ancestors, obviously in different socio-economic conditions with certain values and ethics. But the growing erosion of values and ethics and the life we are indulging nowadays, what examples we are nurturing and what we are leaving for our posterity? What legacy we are leaving for them? Are we not responsible for the dooms day they are supposed to experience with? Their afflictions and agonies are not our sincere cultivation? Is it not high time for us to ponder that will we only indulge ourselves to garner wealth only? When we will get rid of our hibernation and could realize the gravity of values and ethics? When we will get rid of the premise,” We cannot miss wood for the trees?” Strange we are indeed!

Debashish this is surely a sad commentary on the state of health care not only in your own country but in many parts of the world. I'm inclined to let the comments of Ali Anani, PhD and Isabella Wesoly PBP BA Hons, Dip. IRIS, FRSA also speak for me.

Debasish, you brought up some very relevant topics that are not inclusive to India. It's horrible that the tourniquet was left on the baby's arm, resulting in lack of blood flow which led to gangrene and amputation. That would be grounds for a major law suit in the US. I agree, a person can not be objective when it comes to treating their own family member. The advice I give many- Make sure a loved on or family member is always present when someone is in treatment or a patient in the hospital. It's sad but patients, along with families need to be educated today in order to ensure proper healthcare for themselves and/or loved ones. Very good article.

I wonder, Debasish, if the loss of the infant's hand was due to a focus on money or simply negligent practice. Your questioning of values and ethics, in the case of the child it seems that with intent focus on an alternative another problem was created. This proves how in treating any condition, the whole body must be considered. Thank you for sharing your view of the 'forest of strangeness'

Thank you dear Debasish for writing this saddening post. I believe the problems you highlight are global and aren't restricted to India. Instead of advancing education and medicine some professionals have discarded all ethos and values seeing money as the only value. This is monetary slavery and shall lead to irresponsible acts. I just wonder why? It much more honorable to leave footprints of achievements for serving people. When they die they shall take no money with them and shall not leave anything of value to be remembered.
