To those of you reading this and who are familiar with the show “Westworld”, it may seem that we are headed in that direction. In "Westworld," we see the dangers of unchecked AI and the consequences of creating machines with human-like consciousness. While the show portrays a fictional world where AI has gone awry, it serves as a cautionary tale (in my opinion: to the paranoid) about the importance of responsible development and regulation of artificial intelligence. However, it's important to remember that "Westworld" is just a story, and while it may seem realistic, it's not a reflection of the current state of AI development. Instead, it should be used as a reminder of the potential risks of AI if not developed and used responsibly.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been a topic of much debate and discussion in recent months, with many people expressing concerns about the potential risks and dangers that this technology could pose. However, there is also a growing movement of thinkers and innovators who believe that we should not fear AI, but rather embrace it and explore its full potential. In this essay, we will explore the reasons why we should not fear AI and how we can embrace this technology to shape our future.

Firstly, it is important to understand that AI has the potential to revolutionize many aspects of our lives. Through open discussions and active engagement, we can work together to create a framework that fosters responsible AI development and deployment while simultaneously advancing the potential benefits of this revolutionary technology.

The development of AI is a testament to our innate curiosity and desire to explore and understand the world around us. Without this curiosity, we would not have the likes of Alan Turing, who laid the foundations for modern computing and AI. Turing's work during World War II in cracking the German Enigma code was a pivotal moment in history and laid the foundation for the development of modern computing. The curiosity that drove Turing to develop his groundbreaking ideas is the same curiosity that drives the development of AI today. In many ways, AI is simply the natural progression of human evolution, and it has the potential to revolutionize our world in ways that we cannot yet imagine. Therefore, it's essential that we continue to embrace and nurture this curiosity and ensure that we are using AI in ways that benefit humanity as a whole.

Just as curiosity drove the development of AI, it has also led to major breakthroughs in the field of genetics and medicine. The mapping of the human genome was a monumental feat that required a great deal of curiosity and scientific inquiry. It allowed us to gain a much deeper understanding of the human body and opened up new possibilities for medical treatments. Today, we have the ability to use tools like CRISPR to make precise edits to our genetic code, potentially curing diseases that were once thought to be untreatable. None of these advancements would have been possible without the human drive to explore and push the boundaries of what is possible. While there are certainly ethical concerns to consider with these technologies, we must not let fear, uncertainty, and surely not legislation hold us back from the potential benefits that they could bring.

I cannot stress the above enough, regardless of the fact that I am personally biased since I have a daughter with an incurable genetic disease (Cystic Fibrosis).

Nassim Nicholas Taleb (one of my favorite authors), the author of the book "Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder," argues that systems that are anti-fragile can withstand and even benefit from shocks and uncertainties. In the case of legislation and AI, the legal system is not anti-fragile because it is not equipped to deal with the uncertainty and complexity that comes with rapid technological advancement.

As new technologies like AI continue to evolve, they will undoubtedly bring new risks and challenges that legislation may will not be able to keep up with. However, by embracing this uncertainty and allowing for experimentation, we can develop anti-fragile systems that can adapt to changing circumstances. This means that instead of relying solely on legislation to regulate AI, we should also encourage collaboration between industry leaders, academics, and policymakers to create a more resilient and flexible system.

In conclusion, the rapid advancement of AI technology presents both opportunities and challenges for society. While there are legitimate concerns about the potential risks and negative consequences of AI, we should not let fear hinder progress. Instead, we should embrace AI as the next step in our human evolution and recognize that it is fueled by the same human curiosity that has driven progress in other fields like genomics and medicine. We should also acknowledge that legislation will always be lagging behind technological advances, but we can create anti-fragile systems that can adapt to changing circumstances. By doing so, we can unlock the full potential of AI and ensure that it is used in a way that benefits society as a whole.
