If we can inspire a love of reading in our children, oh, the places they’ll go.

If we can inspire a love of reading in our children, oh, the places they’ll go.

As a father, and now grandfather, I find great joy in sitting down with a child, opening a book and going on a journey of imagination. (Green Eggs and Ham is still my favorite.) As March is National Reading Month, I want to encourage people to find ways to help children cultivate an ability and passion for reading. Check out the fun ideas from organizations like Read Across America and Family Reading Nights. Seek out special school or library events this month. Consider volunteering at or donating books to local literacy organizations.

Teachers, students and parents should check out the free resources Curriculum Pathways offers for readers at all skill levels. The Curriculum Pathways team has curated a list of resources for struggling readers. The list includes resources for basic skills and strategies, tips on reading different styles and genres, consuming primary sources and links to some of the most popular Curriculum Pathways reading apps.

For example, Read Aloud is a great option for beginning readers as it meets them at their skill levels. Children can read on their own with help from the app. And, parents can record themselves reading books. Young readers can see words highlighted as the familiar voice speaks each word.

In Reading Records, students read and record a passage from the app’s extensive library, answer related quiz questions, and retell what they've read in their own words. It’s difficult for a teacher with 30 students at varying reading levels to assess and monitor their progress towards reading proficiency. Teachers and students can use Reading Records anywhere, anytime, which frees up valuable classroom time.

If we can inspire a love of reading in our children, oh, the places they’ll go.

We started even before birth with this gem....now we read many Seuss books with the kids. Great lessons.

I am a big proponent of reading. I feel anyone and everyone can enjoy reading...it's a matter of finding the right book and putting the time in.
