We can be heroes!

We can be heroes!

I am not always inspired to write a blog when someone passes away but David Bowie's death could not go unnoticed and one does not have to be any kind of expert on music, fashion or culture (as I am none of these) to realise that this man was a creative genius who touched everyone around the world.

Reinvention

I constantly write about the importance of shedding conditioning, of getting to the root of who we are without the cloak of culture that has been thrown on us by society.

David Bowie was the personification of reinvention and leadership. Whereas many people fear change, he embraced it. Most people fear the loss of their identity yet he constantly threw his away only to rebuilt another. A lot of people are frightened of standing out, of taking the lead or of showing their true selves. Bowie celebrated his exploration of self.

Be yourself

By fearlessly revealing face after face, breaking new ground with his music, his persona and his attitude, Bowie gave everyone the thing that they most crave - permission.

Everything he did was cutting edge and we take so many things for granted that simply may not have happened had it not been for Bowie taking the lead. Musical style, use of video, sexuality, gender identity...there was no ground that he was uncomfortable with. I tell people to step out of their comfort zone. Everywhere was this genius's comfort zone.

Money no object

Now as it happens, he became an international superstar and, I am guessing, extremely wealthy but anybody can see that was not his driving force. Somebody who just wants to be rich is not going to keep chopping and changing when they are already making money. If it is not broken, why fix it.

RIP David Bowie

So the world now mourns the loss of a modern day visionary and may he rest in peace but we have also seen the passing of a modern day hero. Not only does he leave behind a mind-blowing catalogue of art but his spirit has inspired millions of people over decades.

He has lived life like a hero and he has shown us that we can all be heroes. All we have to do is be truly authentic. His authenticity was his genius.

Go be a hero

As you hear the repeated news articles about David Bowie today and the inevitable reflections on his amazing life, you can sit there and carry on thinking that your options are limited, paying the bills, getting through your working day and letting your hair down once in a blue moon OR you can dig deep, take the time to reflect on what you would like to do if someone said to you "it's okay, this is your world and you can do anything you want and nobody will knock you for it". If you are not expressing your true self, now is the time to try.
