In his book 21 lessons for the 21st century Prof. Yuval Noah - Harari claims that that at the moment we do not know how the world and the job market will look like in 2050. We do not know what particular skills students will need.
He supports the pedagogical four Cs’ approaches.
I would like to present the way we can empowering the 4C’s skills in the Musical Instrument Museum in Berlin.
Critical thinking
The museum was designed as a huge resonance box.The vibrant colorful lights bestow an enigmatic atmosphere .
The architecture is a living eco to the musical instruments that are on display, on one hand. On the other hand, visitors who wander around the museum fill in the box with their human music.
How do we encourage our visitors to be aware to the physical situation in the museum ?
By asking visitors to relate to the issue we will open their eyes to the architecture and its implications. We will provide them a topic for learning based on location research.
Visitors’ answers will be the opening argument for a critical thinking dialogue in situ.
Communication
Composing music is an act of communication. Musicians provide us their personal unique observations.
Bringing the awareness of music as a communication skill, as the best means to enhance cultural awareness, is a challenge that music educators face.
By providing visitors a mission before the visit:
Which music do you hear when you want to feel home far away from home?
What is your coach’ favorite music?
Answers to these questions can arise the importance about the cultural aspect of music.
The selected music can be a starting point for the visit which will focus on the communication aspects of the music.
Collaboration
Visitors can experience the excitement of composing original music when they play the electronic instruments that are on display. There are different instruments for creating a group whistle or rhythmic melody.
They can easily record their artistic piece with their phones.
The fruit of such a collaborative work will stay with the visitors after the visit as an authentic souvenir.
Creativity
Hariri describes the changing world and the need to face new situations that will require the ability for people to re-invent themselves.
Watching the artisans’ carving tools for is a great inspiration for visitors to guess and follow the instruments building processes.
Re- curating one hall, is window that will enable visitors to express their personal taste.
The ideas came to my mind while watching the way teens and adults around the museum.
Hariri gives the philosophical support for rethinking about education.
I am ready to give you a hand with the technology that will make his ideas true.
