"We believe that a more diverse workforce will be a better workforce."

Phil Giles, our Director of Football, recently spoke to Simon Austin of the Training Ground Guru podcast. As part of that, he talked about finding the best people and the benefits of advertising externally when you are recruiting staff.

“The first thing is to think about is how can we advertise this more widely?”

“This is relevant in two ways. One is, if I spoke to my contacts and network, I have a very small sub-set of available people out there and I’m sure there must be some people out there who are good at their jobs who I wouldn’t actually know. Even if you do a recruitment process which doesn’t result in a particular person getting a job, it helps you build your contact base and your network for future cases so that is very helpful as well.

“By doing that you get the best possible candidate. You keep a turnover of staff and new ideas coming into the club as well by recruiting externally, rather than always focusing on people who you know, internally or externally.

“And the other thing that is a bigger focus today, than it has ever been, is on the diversity of your workforce. We have certain targets, but they are not targets for the sake of having targets. They are targets because we believe that a more diverse workforce will be a better workforce. By advertising externally, we will get a much broader range of diversity of candidates as well and that is really important.”

“That’s the way we do it. I think it is a good way. Sometimes what we will do a recruitment process we will have an internal application and we employ the internal applicant, promoting them up a step. That’s good as well. Not only is it good to show that we reward our own staff on their career path - we also demonstrate to them that they were the best out of a proper recruitment process and it wasn’t just handed to them on a plate. So, they earned it themselves. I think it is good to do it from that perspective as well.”
