Are we answering the right questions?
In the book Thinking: Fast and Slow, the authors made two fascinating points:
1) When faced with a difficult situation, we often answer an easier one instead without recognizing the substitution.
2) We share an apparent inability to acknowledge the full extent of our ignorance and the uncertainty of the world we live in.
Obviously, we all need to make generalizations in order to simplify the chaos and complexity of everyday life -- at work and at home. However, we all need to pay special attention to the risks associated with this. When faced with challenging situations, it is crucial that we develop resource banks (whether they be people or knowledge bases) that can help us fill the gaps in our own skill sets and help us prevent consequences that can result from substitution errors that can send us down the wrong path.

8 年Lots of interesting thoughts your summary sparks. I agree that we need to surround ourselves with people with different backgrounds and experiences so we can round out our own skills. I also think that we need to be sure that we listen to those differences in opinion and then apply what we've learned, otherwise, what's the point?
