We already do FAI! Why do we need AS9145 PPAP?
I often get asked by aerospace manufacturers, “We already do First Article Inspection (FAI) and have been for years. Why do we need the new AS9145 PPAP?”
The answer is simple:
- FAI verifies that you can make at least one good part
- PPAP evaluates your ability to consistently make conforming products, including:
- The process you follow.
- What risks are present?
- How the risks are controlled.
- The measurement system only accepts good parts and only rejects bad parts.
The usual response is “OK, fine, but we are not automotive making 300 parts an hour. We are am ecstatic if we get an order for 300 parts over several years.”
A common example of an aerospace PPAP approval form has the following items:
Here are some ways to create and manage information to execute PPAP for High Mix/Low Volume and Engineer to Order Manufacturing-
? Group parts into part families
- Which parts use the same manufacturing process flow?
- Which parts have 90%+ features in common?
? Design and validate processes based on part families
Summary
? FAI verifies one-time conformance by a product sample.
? PPAP gives confidence in future product.

10 个月Great article, was a reference to an ASQ APQP presentation from Marc Doolittle, previous employee for GM. I really enjoyed the APQP/PPAP discussion and history lesson.

4 年The secret is APQP not PPAP. Consider APQP as being the process with PPAP the output from the process. The PPAP file is the collection of documents created when you follow APQP. It's APQP with its associated core tools which delivers zero defects not the PPAP file. Sadly many organisation request PPAP from the supplier. If this request is made in isolation it can drive the supply organisation to tick boxes to achieve PPAP sign off. It's driving the process from the end point. Organisations should encourage the supply organisation to implement APQP not simply request PPAP this results in win win. Win for the organisation win for the supplier. Simple innit !
