We All Scream for Ice Cream: A New Report Highlights the Frozen Treat's Universal Appeal

It's hot this summer, and as the summer sun blazes, there's one treat that consistently brings joy to people of all ages: ice cream. According to a recent survey from the National Frozen and Refrigerated Foods Association, Inc. (NFRA), nearly three-quarters (72%) of Americans believe that no summer meal is complete without a refreshing scoop of ice cream for dessert. However, there is some variability in choices by region and generation.

Here's what the survey tells us

  • Environmental Considerations: More than half (56%) of respondents expressed willingness to pay more for ice cream packaged in eco-friendly materials. This trend is particularly pronounced among younger consumers, with 67% of both GenZ and millennials willing to pay extra for sustainable packaging, compared to 52% of GenX and 44% of baby boomers.
  • Testing New Flavors: Around 70% of adults enjoy trying new and unconventional flavors, a trend that is particularly strong among younger consumers. Notably, 80% of Gen Z, 81% of millennials, and 82% of Gen X reported a love for exploring new flavors.
  • Brand Loyalty: Brand loyalty is notably stronger in the Southern (41%) and Northeastern (42%) regions compared to the Midwest and West, highlighting how local preferences and cultural factors shape purchasing decisions.
  • Budget Conscious: When it comes to purchasing, 59% prefer buying ice cream at grocery stores to save money, and 58% enjoy it in the comfort of their homes.
  • Worth a Splurge: Over three-quarters of adults (78%) are willing to spend extra on top-tier ice cream crafted with premium ingredients
