We all remember the good old days in the logistics business.

We all remember the good old days in the logistics business. Back when face time meant you were in front of someone not on a screen. When people picked up the phone and talked to you. You didn’t have voice mail or email. People took messages and handed them to you.   The telex machine was jamming away and the fax just came out. Remember the paper? Computers ha! They were called typewriters; carbon paper and white out where you BFFs.   Relationships where key and so was a fat expense account. The Mad Men days of a 3 hour lunches where common, you closed the deal and crawled back to your car or train.  Yes you drove and made it home. You got the business and everyone was making money. You would see your customers on a regular basis and being a road warrior making 30 plus sales calls a week was a given. Now you’re lucky if you can get an appointment or someone to return a phone call or an email.  We are all so busy now and don’t have time to even eat our lunch. Funny as fast as the world is moving we have forgotten what matters. The days of picking up the phone and having a 5 minute conversation are over or are they? I don’t know about you but it’s interesting when you pick up the phone and talk someone how fast you can get things resolved. Now granted you need to follow up the conversation with an email but a 5 minute conversation quickly gets things going in real time and reduces the endless back and forth of emails.  Granted the Mad Men days are over and the age of appts and computers are the new norm but how about doing a little old school selling and have a conversation! You might just enjoy it!

Sadly, this is reflected in all industries. People are now only answering their phones and email on a mission critical basis. I can't tell you how many times I hear from customers, about the abhorrent number of calls a day they are getting on an a daily basis, if not hourly! They are simply overwhelmed. The relentless tactics and nearly irrational strategies deployed to gain any foot in the door. are simply insane. This gives the us a very bad name. Think about it, how often does your phone ring at night from solicitors who will stop at nothing to get you talking.
