We All Have One

We All Have One

This weekend, Allison and I went to the Michael Franti concert at Red Rocks. It was one of the best shows I have ever been to because it wasn’t just a concert. It was a message wrapped into a performance. The message…

…Be KIND to EVERYONE.

There was one line though, that really stuck with me and inspired me to write this email today:

“You would LOVE EVERYONE if you knew their STORY"?

Yes, we all have one... A story that is.?

The more I think about it, the more I see that?everything we do, we do for a reason. THERE’S A BACK STORY TO EVERY HUMAN. Our situations, beliefs, and actions are a RESULT of a story that makes PERFECT SENSE. ?

In my experience, I have discovered that the more I understand someone’s story, the more COMPASSION I have for them. No matter how full of “faults” they appear to be on the surface.

I’ve also learned that we don’t have to agree with everything a person does in order to have compassion and love for them. We can have compassion and love, AND still DISAGREE.

I believe that when we step back, seek to understand, and hear a person’s story, we realize?that they are a?flawed human being who just wants to be seen, heard, and loved.

Just like YOU, and just like ME…

It’s in this space that we realize that we’re not that different. We’re one in the same in MANY respects, with just a few superficial differences.

It’s in this space that we realize that we have the capacity to love?EVERY human on this planet. No matter how flawed they may appear to be.

It’s in this space that we realize that we have the power to change the world, by simply having COMPASSION for everyone.

Who’s a person in your life (whether you know them personally or from afar) that you have become an expert in judging?

Why do you think they do the things that they do?

What do you think their story is?

Maybe I’m a hopeless dreamer, but I believe that through the process of?SEEKING to?UNDERSTAND why people believe what they believe, or do what they do, we gain the ability to discover that it actually makes perfect sense why someone is they way they are.

And perhaps through this EXPERIMENT, we get to discover compassion for every lovely, yet flawed, human being.

Here’s to your journey in our world, my friend! Make it a fantastic Tuesday and I’ll see you soon.
