We All Have 2 Eyes

We all have 2 eyes: a defining eye and a refining eye.

In my experience, most visionaries have a bias towards their "defining eye".

The defining eye creates foundation and establishes direction. It sees the core essence of things and always sets its sights on the big picture. It thrives on creativity and risk taking.

Naturally, there are drawbacks to this approach. The defining eye lacks patience, skimming long emails and messages, glazing over at details, accents, and accessories.

This is where the "refining eye" comes in.

People like me-- fixers, writers, editors, and the like-- have a bias towards their refining eye.

The refining eye hones, polishes, and enhances what already exists with ruthless precision and restraint. It improves, optimizes, and adds finesse to bring out the best version of something.

However, the refining eye can stagnate the creative process if introduced too soon.

Here's the message.

Know your bias. Learn to hold tension and establish the proper balance between the two eyes. Otherwise, you'll either be too high in the clouds or too deep in the dirt to see your best ideas come to light.
