We Are All Amazing and We Are All Screwed Up

It isn’t what happens to us, it is how we interpret what happens to us and then how we react that often defines our relationships, how we perform in our lives and the impact we have on the people around us.
The original talk-track we were given has an enormous influence on our interpretation of events.
We all have habits and behaviors that were downloaded like software into our lovely little brains and minds for the first decade of our lives. The software downloads were compliments of our parents, friends, aunts, uncles and siblings. Some of those software downloads were good things like love, empathy, grit, communication, self-awareness and patience. Some of those downloads were not so good things like insecurities, forms of mental and physical punishment, the inability to love or be loved, desires, fears or the inability to communicate.
The talk tracks and behaviors were unknowingly delivered to us as children as a steady IV drip over dinner conversations, car rides, sporting events, parental exchanges and how you were praised or punished. You had no choice.
They were not your fault. Who you became was not your responsibility. However, staying in those behaviors, if they are destructive to you or those around you and changing them is your responsibility and if you choose not to change them, then it is your fault.
The first step is to identify those behaviors that are not serving you or the ones around you. The second step is determining the behaviors you want to replace those less than desirable behaviors. The third step is creating an active discipline to pay incredibly close attention to those replacement behaviors and stand guard until they transition from discipline to habit and finally to natural.
Time to get to work. What will it cost you if you don’t?

6 年Be present in your children’s lives, read to/with them at bedtime, help coach their teams (sports, dance, etc), include them in your charitable endeavors, eat dinner together whenever possible, put the phones/screens down (parents & kids!). Our children are our legacies and our futures. Raise kind, positive citizens. Great post!
