Thiem: Has Bias Crept Into Your Park Operation?
While in Branson, Mo., for the?Campground Owners Expo,?we had the opportunity to meet other campground owners who had read our articles. We enjoyed hearing the feedback; several people mentioned how they can relate to the topics because they reflect the things that also affect their campground. We’ve always found that these articles provide a fresh way of digging into topics and ideas that we had otherwise considered commonplace. Networking, employees, you name it, more time spent reflecting has always given us new insight into our business problems and possible solutions.
However, while in Branson, we had a bit of an epiphany — or at least a long pause — when we asked ourselves how much of what we say in these articles, or how we act and what we do, is based on some sort of implicit bias. To be honest, it was unsettling to think that bias could even creep into how we operate our business or conduct ourselves through the rest of our lives, but we thought it was an interesting enough topic to tackle in our article this month.
