Not so fantastic? Charting the rise of life with synthetic plastic.
Researchers have estimated that 8.3 billion metric tons (Mt) of plastics have been produced globally to date, of which approximately more than 6 billion Mt have become waste. It appears that only 9% of this waste has been recycled and incinerated while the rest has been disposed into landfills or into natural environments.
Our economies are ‘leaking’ plastic everywhere, so much that the presence of artificial polymers in geological strata can be used as indicator of the current era, the so-called Anthropocene, writes Fabrizio Varriale, PhD .
Somewhat surprisingly, some solutions to this problem may lie in the past.
