Ways To Quit Your Job Gracefully, Without Creating A Stir

Whether you love your current job or you hate it, when it comes to quitting your company for any reason, it is always a good idea to do so peacefully in order to maintain your professional reputation and keep your opportunities open.

It is often heard that when a person quits their job, they go on the deep end and argue with a lot of co-workers and higher-ups to prove what a bad company it is to work in. Instead, it is often wiser to take the high road, especially since the corporate world is always very well connected and you’ve got a reputation to maintain.

So let’s look at a few great tips to ensure you leave your job gracefully.

Write A Formal Letter

The first step is always to write a well-worded and polite letter of resignation that subtly states your reason for wanting to leave the job- without saying anything negative or nasty. A resignation letter that is mailed to HR, as well as your higher-ups, also give you the advantage of having everything on record.

Include the following in your resignation letter:

  • The time and date at the top.
  • The person you’re addressing, such as your manager or HR.
  • The company’s address.
  • Statement of resignation and gratitude.
  • The date of your last day of work.
  • Closing statement and signature.

Give A Notice of at Atleast 15 Days

No matter how soon you feel like getting rid of your job, leaving before giving two weeks’ notice could potentially hurt your reputation and your chances of getting hired in the future. Plus, during that time, your employer will need at least two weeks to ensure that your duties get distributed to other employees until they hire a replacement. So, giving plenty of notice is a good way to show respect for your employer.

Also be sure to tell your next company (if any) to wait to get you on board for this span of time, so that they’re well-informed.

Avoid Trash Talk

When you hand in your resignation, do not go about gossiping about the company or spreading negativity about your experience, no matter how bad it would have been.?No matter how much you dislike your job, make your transition a positive one. When asked why you’re leaving by co-workers or management, it’s best to avoid gossip or complaints about the work environment. Additionally, giving a big story about why you’re leaving isn’t necessary. Be brief and honest while being careful with your words. If you plan on working for another company or a competitor, your current employer doesn’t need to know.

Make Sure You Have All Documents

Make a list of all the documents you’ll be needing from the company and write them a mail asking politely for all of the. Some crucial documents you must gather include an experience letter, salary/pay slips, joining and admission letters if pending, letters of promotion, health insurance and tax information.?

Be sure to save any files you want to Google Drive, or elsewhere online, or email copies to yourself. You may not have access to your computer once you turn in your resignation, so have copies of everything you need before you tell your boss that you\'re quitting.

Ask for a Reference

Ask your boss and colleagues if they would be willing to give you a reference. If they agree, ask them to write you a LinkedIn recommendation as well as be available via email or phone. You\'ll have the reference as part of your LinkedIn profile, which is great for your future job search endeavors. Also let them know that future employers may reach out to them for a telephonic reference.?
