Are you a recent college graduate or a soon-to-be graduate? Or are you considering changing career paths? No matter the situation you are in there is a lot to consider as you begin to step into your career path. It’s a long process with a lot of steps to consider.?
This can make it feel like it is difficult to prepare for what’s next. I understand that it can be overwhelming, so here are some things that you can do to prepare for your future career.?
Search and Apply for Multiple Job Opportunities?
As much as we would all love it if we always secured the first or preferred job we applied for, that is not the reality. You will be up for the position against multiple other applicants with qualifications for the job, and sometimes, even when we do our best, we do not get the job we hoped for. That's why it's important to apply to multiple different jobs, so you are putting yourself out there and increasing your chances of securing a job no matter what. Do not be afraid to seek jobs outside of your local area either; you never know what opportunities you may find.?
Research the Positions and Companies?
It is important to prepare for job interviews by putting in prior research. Generally, when applying for a job, the role description will be included on the application page. It is critical to thoroughly read the description as your potential employer is likely to reference that during an interview. You should also look into the company where you are applying before an interview. Looking at their website and social media will give you a better idea of what the company does and its values. Plus, showing the employer that you have spent time learning about the company will show your preparedness and interest in the position.?

Speak With Peers and Other Professionals?
Talking with peers and other professionals is a great way to learn about your future career and what steps you should take when pursuing it. Professionals in your field can provide valuable advice and answer any questions about the career that you have, along with providing insight into what it looks like to work in that career. Additionally, you and your peers can help each other prepare for interview processes by doing things such as reviewing each other’s resumes and conducting mock interviews. Each person’s experience as they work towards their desired career path is unique, so there is always something you and your peers can learn from each other.?
Evaluate Your Online Presence?
Potential employers are likely to research who you are as they consider whether to interview or hire you. Maintaining a professional presence online increases your chances of getting a callback. Do not share things that will damage your professional image, even if it is on your personal social media pages. You never know who will see it. How you present yourself on professional networking sites is also vital. On platforms like LinkedIn, keep your profile up-to-date with relevant information, such as job history, publications, and other experiences. Many employers will search you through these platforms to get a better idea of your professional image and experience, so you want to be sure that they are impressed with what they see.?
Plan Ahead
Considering what steps come next is useful no matter where you are in career development. You probably have some idea of what you want your career to look like in the future. In what ways can you best achieve that vision? Take some time to think about what you need to accomplish moving forward to get where you want to be. However, if you are unsure of where you want to go next, that is okay. Plan ahead in different ways. Consider your interests, experiences, and skills and how those can translate into a career. Now, what will you need to succeed in that career? Mapping out your career path will help prepare you for this journey, even if you cannot predict everything that will happen.?
There can be a lot of pressure in considering your future as a professional. After all, your career is one of the most impactful things in your life. These few steps are just some of the many you can take to lift some of that pressure and prepare for what’s ahead.
