Last week, I shared how we increase participation at a school by 30%. Let's talk some more strategies. Specifically, how you can increase participation by 10% in just two months.

This is how we turned empty dining halls into gold mines of student activity!?

What you need is a team dedicated to making necessary and impactful changes. That means paying attention to:

• Putting the right menu items at the top of your list.
• Nutritional value and price filtering the selection of menu items.
• Customer opinion which will aid in increased participation at all levels.

I’ve personally put initiatives in place throughout high schools yielding increases upwards of 46% over a 3 year period. My approach was and is still quite simple. We “let the student tell us the kinds of items they want to see in their cafeteria.” Major restaurants often poll their customers. They complete surveys and ask their customers to provide feedback: on service, food preferences and areas in need of improvement.

Under my direction, cafeterias implemented such interactive practices as:

• Taste test champions
• Cafeteria managers personally going to tables and asking students about their meal
• Every item on the menu meeting testing criteria, including 70% student acceptability.
• Voting online
