Ways To Handle An Argument Like A Champ // Leadership Hacks

Let's talk about arguments and why it's important for any leader to master this skill.

Arguments are claims backed by reasons that are supported by evidence. In ideal world, yes.

However what do you do if you find yourself in an argument with someone who has no logic behind their reasoning and / or being aggressive and toxic towards you in the process? Sometimes it feels like you need to diffuse a ticking time bomb.

How comfortable are you handling these kind of emotionally charged conversations?

This happens a lot in a real world. Quite often we can find ourselves dragged into arguments that aren't worth our time or effort, yet we need to deal with it effectively.

Making an argument means trying to convince others that you are correct or persuade them to take a particular action. This is an important skill that any leader needs to master.

Arguments can be very healthy though, as it allows you to clear the air, manage and set expectations and get your point across, providing you are handling it in an assertive, calm manner and the other other is actually willing to listen to you.

WHY WE ARGUE?

People argue for four main reasons:

  1. To clarify thinking as individuals or groups
  2. To explain or defend actions or beliefs
  3. To solve problems or make judgment
  4. To have fun and for the sake of drama

If you find yourself find in an emotionally charged conversation where there is a lot of tension and stakes are high, best advice I can give you is to leave your ego by the door when you enter this dialogue and handle it with a cool head and a bigger picture in mind.


Here are some ways how you can handle an argument more effectively:

  • Don’t use absolute statements. Avoid saying ‘always’ and ‘never’
  • Agree with one of their points first before pushing your own, however be genuine about it
  • Ask ‘how’ as opposed to ‘why’. Most people have a hard time practically implementing an idea and a ‘how question’ will prompt them to think strategically and action oriented and potentially see the flaws in their reasoning / solution - for example 'how so?' or 'how am I supposed to do that?'
  • Exaggerate their point of view to check back for understanding and allow the other person to explain their point in more detail - eg ‘am I right in understanding, what you mean is ...’
  • Use facts and don’t round up stats. Specific numbers are more convincing
  • Keep asking questions, prob the reality and logic of their argument / point until they stump themselves
  • Appeal to higher morals / emotions / values according to your observations on what seems important to the person
