Waymo, With Help from Uber, Launches Robotaxi Service in Austin Ahead of SXSW

Waymo has started offering robotaxi rides through the Uber app in Austin, Texas, just in time for the SXSW festival. Austin marks Uber’s first market managing Waymo’s fleet, with plans to extend their collaboration to Atlanta later this year, leveraging the combination of Waymo’s technology and Uber’s platform.

  • When Uber customers request an UberX, Uber Comfort, Uber Green, or Uber Comfort Electric, they will have the option to be paired with Waymo vehicles, if they are available, which may affect driver earnings.
  • Waymo aims to highlight its driverless capabilities during the festival, attracting around 300K visitors that primarily work in creative industries, including music and film.
  • Waymo’s rollout preempts Tesla’s anticipated driverless service in Austin, expanding its operational area to 37 square miles across key city neighborhoods.

Challenges Ahead as Uber Integrates Robotaxis Into Its Platform

In a new interview with TechCrunch, Sachin Kansal, Uber’s new chief product officer, discusses the operational hurdles in integrating autonomous vehicles within its fleet. Combining robotaxis with Uber’s platform requires sophisticated technology to decide whether to dispatch a human driver or an autonomous vehicle, Kansal said.

  • This robotaxi venture divides tasks differently from Waymo’s usual operations. Waymo will handle tasks like vehicle testing, roadside support, and some rider assistance. Meanwhile, Uber will oversee fleet services, including cleaning, maintenance, inspections, charging, and management of depot functions via a company currently known as Moove Cars, soon to be called Avomo.
  • Kansal said introducing robotaxis required Uber to overhaul its backend operations to effectively allocate incoming ride requests between human and AI drivers, presenting technological and operational challenges.

New Colorado Bill Proposes Stricter Safety and Background Check Requirements for Uber and Lyft

A new bill proposed by Democratic legislators in Colorado aims to enhance safety for Uber and Lyft users by imposing stricter background check procedures and additional safety measures for drivers, sparking concerns from the rideshare companies regarding operational feasibility.

  • The bill would require stricter background checks, including fingerprint-based verification, restrict drivers to 10-hour shifts, and mandate continuous audio and video recording of rides.
  • Violations could result in civil lawsuits and actions under deceptive trade practices, allowing injured parties to file against TNCs or drivers, potentially increasing financial liabilities for companies.
  • Uber and Lyft express worry over the bill’s specifics, highlighting operational challenges and the potential impact on business continuity, particularly concerning sensitive background check requirements and their effect on employment opportunities for marginalized communities.

Transparency Law in Colorado Sparks Conversation About Rideshare Fare Splits

A new feature in the Uber and Lyft apps for Colorado users now displays the percentage of each fare that goes directly to drivers, thanks to recent legislation aimed at increasing pricing transparency among transportation network companies (TNCs). On LinkedIn, investor Sunny Parikh took a screenshot of the new feature in action, sparking a discussion about whether Uber is taking too large of a cut from drivers.

  • Colorado’s 2024 law mandates TNCs to reveal fare distributions, spotlighting how much drivers earn per ride as opposed to the companies’ share.
  • Although Uber attempted to halt the law through a lawsuit in January 2025, the court sided against them, ensuring that the transparency requirement remains in effect.
  • In Sunny’s post, the revelation that Uber retained a substantial 42% of the fare in the screenshot has sparked discussions about fair compensation for drivers and whether Uber was taking too much of a “trust tax.”

Uber’s New $5 Shuttle Service in Chicago Sparks Concerns Over Driver Wages

Uber has launched a shuttle service at the United Center in Chicago, offering fans $5 rides to various city locations, raising concerns among rideshare drivers about potential impacts on demand for rides.

  • The Uber Shuttle allows fans to reserve seats up to two days before events, aiming to ease post-event traffic by transporting up to 23 passengers to locations like the Magnificent Mile and Union Station.

  • Rideshare and taxi advocates worry that the service might reduce demand for regular Uber rides. The United Center is not well connected to Chicago’s public transit system, which has made it a popular destination for riders.
  • Uber offers a similar shuttle service in NYC, offering rides from Midtown Manhattan to LaGuardia Airport.
