I’ve discussed this using our 5 Step Signature Approach.
Why is this book important??
I’m ALWAYS talking about your Inclusion Journey?
?This book is talking about your Equity journey in an elegant way.
This is really a leadership book that addresses Equity.?
That’s the style of the author.?
When discussing her work she says:?
?“I designed an inclusive leadership education session (which is really just leadership education without the qualifier”
That’s how I feel about this book.
Who is this book for?
This could not be clearer:?
Leaders and aspiring leaders that shape corporate workplaces in America.
This was reflected in:?
- Tone?
- Posture?
- Content?
?This reflects the authors experience.
Key Message of the book?
People with power and position have the “opportunity and responsibility” to make way for people who don’t have power or position.
You may be thinking this is a euphemism for privilege.?
I think privilege is a word that is thrown around without context.?
It’s becoming less useful in conversations.?
The author provides a lot of context.
Chapter 1 is called Power and Privilege.?

Key Takeaways
The author had some cool tactical advice for “different types of leaders who want to lean into learning about what true support looks like”.
They were written by the author shortly after George Floyd was murdered and “and corporate America was turning itself inside out to connect with Black employees, but the approaches timeless and universal.”
It was literally a script on how to humbly adopt a learning posture.?
They covered how to be :?
- The Compassionate Connector
- The Bold Bridge
- The Truth Teller
- The Supportive Seeker

Other Considerations?
I started talking about the concept of the Equity Journey.?
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion. These are ambiguous terms.?
Given the considerable skill of the author I would have liked a more in depth discussion of Equity in a way that makes sense to people like you and me.?
I talk about this more on the show including:?
?- 20 -60- 20 Theory and your Inclusion Journey?
?- Why I thought Chapter 6 was outstanding?
?- Why this book was so much easier to read than other books in this space.?
PS.
If you like these book breakdowns.?
It’s perfect if you want more practical insights in less time.
You get to avoid being overwhelmed and get clarity on what’s relevant.
This is what I use when working with billion dollar companies but it won't cost you the earth.
