The Way You See It.

The Way You See It.

In 1972,?Steve Jobs?took a?calligraphy?class at Reed College guided by campus posters he saw after leaving school. The posters' fonts were artistic enough to get his attention, and he took the class, despite knowing that it wouldn't give him any credit toward a degree.

He said, “I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about how to vary the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typeface great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating?. "

We often look at the design from an isolated point of view. Where we only focus on the outcome and its aesthetics. Generally, we overlook the process of designing. It is the process that pushes us outside of our comfort zone. It broadens the horizon of our thinking. That's the creative muscle we need to build to produce non-linear, out-of-the-box ideas.

Here is another story:

Initially, computing was only to solve problems and design solutions for advancement. So, the User experience focused on creating functional and efficient interfaces. There was little attention paid to aesthetics or usability beyond basic functionality. A handful of fonts were available for the users to present their inputs.

What do you see here? Limitation or opportunity?

Jobs saw that opportunity and introduced Mac with new options for fonts. And his calligraphy class helped him to come up with that.

With the rise of the internet, there was a greater focus on designing websites that were visually appealing and easy to navigate. This led to the developing of web design principles such as responsive design, which ensures that websites adapt to different screen sizes and devices.

The proliferation of smartphones and other mobile devices led to a major shift in UX design. Mobile devices have smaller screens and different interaction methods, such as touchscreens, which require new design approaches to make interfaces usable and intuitive.

The rise of voice-activated digital assistants such as Amazon's Alexa and Apple's Siri has led to the development of voice interface design. This requires a different approach to designing interactions, as users communicate through speech rather than typing or clicking.

This dynamic shift has led to the development of user-centered design principles, such as conducting user research, creating personas, and using iterative design processes.

Now the spectrum is going to change again in many ways. IoT, AR, VR, and AI all of these are breaking the boundaries of how we used to interact. That creative muscle is something that can make any sense of the upcoming out-of-the-box problems and come up with a solution.

Linearity feels safe and comfortable, but in the long run, it brings immense pain. Are you ready to face the wave and embrace the discomfort?
