Each one of us has a different point of view, different preferences and ways we go about solving problems. How might that help you to consider the career path for you?
Go ahead, take the quick quiz first if you'd like: gecareerpaths.com.
As you explore your career options, you have a lot of choices and it might help you to align with what where would like to create value and what is important to you. Here are a few questions you may consider as you make decisions about what you study, what careers you may want to explore and where you may want to start that career.
- What kinds of problems do you want to solve? Every career involves problem-solving. Whether you are designing a new product, creating a new culinary delight, providing critical services, or teaching in a classroom, you will navigate and solve problems on a small or large scale. Math problems, people problems, technical problems, scheduling problems, resource problems... are all variations on how you use your skills to solve. Are there skills or areas where you can have more impact?
- Who will benefit from your work? When you solve those problems, who benefits? Whether you are benefitting a customer in a retail environment, a student, a community, or society are all possible. This may influence the market or field that you will want to work in. Some of these areas have immediate impact, and others are longer-term.
- Will my work environment support my growth over time? It is helpful to get more information about what a typical day looks like, how the pay and benefits fit your ambitions, and the location of the jobs to have a better view. Keep in mind, your interests will likely expand. Consider the community of people you'll work with and how they will play a role to inspire, guide, and challenge you. Inquire about what to expect for your development over time.
I hope this helps you to gain confidence for your choices ahead. Are there other words of advice you can offer to others who are exploring careers? I welcome your thoughts here.
