A Way Towards Better School Security

As a father of a Freshman in high school and junior high schooler - my heart aches and my brain stresses over the knowledge of the heavy incident that happened in Florida. I can't imagine what these parents are going through.

The problem is not guns and the answer is not so easy as to arm teachers. There are major risks in arming teachers and also greater risks in disarming our 2nd Amendment rights as a reaction to these incidents of terror and violence by evil individuals.

My philosophy is based on the fact that I'm a technologist and I believe we have technology to serve us (not the other way around) - why not use it?

Here are a few of my ideas towards a way to better school security using technology:

  • A mobile "minority report" application based on a neural network of social media flags from evidence of when kids flag other kids of strange / threatening activities such as an outward claim to become a "school shooter". Too often people are afraid of reporting an individual due to fear of retaliation. This app would allow them to be anonymous to help protect their identity unless they wish to be made known to authorities. Flags would only be valid on real social media evidence. A threat level would go immediately to local authorities for further apprehension or questioning of said individual or group and alert all the parents in the immediate area.
  • A drone service that would secure a campus using facial recognition and sonar sensors / or heat sensing technology to flag any person wandering the school grounds during regular school hours. Maybe add a 'Kamikaze' feature to take immediate action against an immediate threat should the authorities fail to act within 30 seconds.
  • Create 'Safe Base' homeroom for every school to protect our kids and teachers. Bullet proof windows, steel reinforced doors and barrier bolt locks. Every 'Safe Base' homeroom should come equipped with medical equipment, kevlar helmets and body armor for teachers to help protect them as they look out for the children.
  • A mental health check app that every teenager at public schools should have on their phones and pass on a yearly basis. It should gauge how much time is spent on social media and give them a risk report for mental health based on their psychological questions answered. Alarms should go to parents and teachers. It is not only for their personal safety but for the safety of others.

Open to hearing more ideas if you've got any and to actually do something with people who want to see change. If you're interested in starting any of these ideas I'm all ears.

I know it's to much to ask but each gun that is sold should come with GPS tracking system that can alert authorities where this gun sold is at all times. They should also create an app that can be put onto every smart phone alerting all public places specifically schools within 1-2 mile radius as this should give schools plenty of time to go into lock down before any shooter even gets one round off he have cops all over the place. Yes this sounds very SCI FI but I'm almost certain that in couple of years this will happen.

Wow. Finally some ideas I can get behind. The first idea is GOLDEN! Why doesn't this exist? Social media mining is being applied to so many other problems, WHY NOT THIS ONE! The signs were there. Look at what LiveUA maps is doing, all that is is data, packaged for use. Mental health checks. Not an easy task - but the military has required semi annual self-assessments for years. I hate doing it. But, it might prevent some horrific events in schools. More than anything, we just need to teach our children to respect each other regardless of opinion, or anything else. Great post! Sharing
