"The way to do, is be!"

"The way to do, is be!"

As someone who has been deeply influenced by the Co-Active model, where the foundation is built around the balance of “being” and “doing,” I’ve found this principle to be transformative in my life. In the Co-Active model, “being” is not just about introspection; it’s the core of our authentic self, while “doing” represents the actions we take in the world. Both are essential, yet finding harmony between the two is often challenging.

This balance is at the heart of what inspired me to write this article. I’ve seen firsthand how powerful it is when we allow ourselves to blend action with presence.

Yet, as Lao Tzu wisely said, “The way to do is be.”?

Profound, right?

How often do we find ourselves caught in the endless cycle of doing, doing, doing, without ever pausing to reconnect with who we are??

We focus on achievements, deadlines, and external validation, while neglecting the deeper, quieter part of ourselves that is essential for true fulfillment. This imbalance can leave us feeling drained, disconnected, and even lost.

I’ve seen way too often how this constant push for productivity can diminish not only our effectiveness but also our joy. Without moments of stillness and self-awareness, we risk becoming reactive rather than intentional, driven by tasks instead of purpose.

The truth is, the most impactful leaders and individuals are those who have mastered the art of integrating both being and doing. They understand that pausing to connect with their inner selves, their values, and their vision is what fuels meaningful, aligned action. This is the balance that leads to authentic leadership, deeper relationships, and ultimately, a more fulfilled life.

Being vs. Doing: What’s the Difference?

“Doing” is the side of us that is constantly in motion, planning, executing, and achieving. It’s the task-oriented part of life that many of us have mastered. But “being” refers to the state of presence, reflection, and awareness. It’s about connecting with our inner selves, understanding who we are beyond our accomplishments, and tapping into our core values.

As Meister Eckhart reminds us, "People should not consider so much what they are to do, as what they are."

This quote reminds us that our actions are more meaningful when they stem from a deep sense of self-awareness. If we are too focused on external achievements without nurturing our inner world, we may find ourselves unfulfilled, even in success.

Why Balance Matters

When we prioritize “being” alongside “doing,” we allow ourselves the space to reflect, recharge, and reconnect with our values and purpose. This balance is not just about relaxation—it’s about alignment. By taking time to “be,” we gain clarity, emotional resilience, and insight, which ultimately makes our actions more purposeful and effective.

For leaders, this balance is particularly critical. Leadership requires not only action but also reflection and presence. A leader who understands the importance of both being and doing is better equipped to make conscious decisions, lead with empathy, and inspire others.

If you find it hard to stop and be, it might be a good idea to start simple - 5 minutes at a time. Set an alarm! Just pause for only 5 minutes. Do nothing! Simply BE!

I know it can be super hard sometimes, but give it a try!

I am sure after a while, you will feel the bliss, calmness and connection!

Remember Lao Tzu’s words: “The way to do is be.”

Focus on that for a while!
