The start of a new year may see us all looking forward to the future, but sometimes the present can churn up some gems from the past!

VOICES FROM THE PAST

The NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS has acquired a machine that can transfer wax cylinder recordings dating back to the late 1800s!

Wax cylinders were the first commercial means of recording sound, but were not made for long-term use, as the earliest models wore out after being played a few dozen times.?The fragile cylinders are especially vulnerable to poor storage conditions.

However, a custom-built piece of equipment called the ENDPOINT CYLINDER AND DICTABELT MACHINE, can now capture sound recorded more than 100 years ago from the cylinders.

Wax cylinders were traditionally played on a phonograph, using a stylus similar to a modern record player to follow grooves in the wax and translate the information into sound.?The Endpoint machine uses a laser that places less stress on the cylinders, allowing it to take a detailed imprint without sacrificing physical integrity.?It can also retrieve information from warped cylinders, or broken cylinder shards, which can then be digitally reconstituted into a complete recording.??

The library is now embarking on an ambitious preservation project to digitize more than 2,500 wax cylinders in its possession - including recordings of the finale of the second act of ‘Aida’, performed by the German singer JOHANNA GADSKI at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1903, and the waltz from ‘Romeo and Juliet’, also from the Met, sung by the Australian soprano NELLIE MELBA.
