There’s something deeply moving about being in the presence of a creature so rare that the world might soon lose it forever. The white-winged duck is one of those creatures. As we trekked through the dense forests of Arunachal Pradesh, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of urgency and wonder. The air was thick with anticipation, and every rustle in the underbrush made us pause, hoping for a glimpse of this elusive bird.
Before embarking on this journey, we had only read about the white-winged duck in articles—another endangered species fighting for survival. But nothing prepared us for the moment when we realized that there are fewer than 800 of these birds left on Earth. To think that nearly a quarter of them are tucked away in this corner of India was both astounding and sobering.
Our path led us to the Conservation Breeding and Research Centre (CBRC) at Pakke Tiger Reserve, where we met Dr. Aftab Khan, a biologist whose work is driven by a deep love for this endangered bird. Dr. Khan’s commitment to the white-winged duck was palpable. He spoke of the bird not just as a species in decline, but as a vital part of the ecosystem—a symbol of what we stand to lose if we don’t act now.
Listening to Dr. Khan, we learned that deforestation and habitat destruction are the primary reasons behind the drastic decline in the white-winged duck population. The lush, swampy forests that once provided a safe haven for these birds are disappearing at an alarming rate, replaced by farmland and human settlements. This loss of habitat, combined with hunting pressures, has pushed the white-winged duck to the brink of extinction.
But what struck us most was the community-driven approach to conservation that Dr. Khan and his team have embraced. Instead of just focusing on the scientific aspects, they’ve woven the local communities into the very fabric of their efforts. These frontline workers, many of whom once hunted these birds, are now their fiercest protectors. It’s a powerful reminder that conservation isn’t just about saving species; it’s about changing hearts and minds.
We spent hours with Dr. Khan, absorbing the stories of success and struggle. He shared how the local people are now taking ownership of the white-winged duck’s future, and how they’re working hand in hand with conservationists to safeguard the delicate balance of their environment. It was clear to us that the fight to save this rare bird is not just a battle against extinction, but a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

As we wrapped up our day, one thought lingered in our minds:
Today, there are 200 white-winged ducks here in this region. Tomorrow, that number depends on all of us.
