“This is Water”: Become Aware First of What You Want

David Foster Wallace’s “This is Water” anecdote opens up with the story of a fish swimming in the ocean. In it, two young fish are asked by an older fish, “How’s the water?” and one of the younger fish turns to the other and says, “Water? What the hell is water?”. Wallace uses this story to point out that often, like fish in the ocean, we’re not aware of what surrounds us.

When you are in the midst of any situation, often you don’t realize that you are in the middle of it.

"The most obvious, important realities are often the ones that are the hardest to see and talk about.” - David Foster Wallace.

I personally believe the hardest thing to do is to notice and to really be honest with ourselves about what is working or not working in our lives.

Frequently, you hear people saying they want to change, but so often, most of us don’t really know what it is that we want to change, what is it that we want to create more of, and what we want to maintain in our lives.

That’s why, whenever you feel like you are craving change in your life, start by really getting clear on what, exactly, you want to change.

The miracle in our lives happens when we become aware of what other possibilities and opportunities exist and are open for us.
