EXCITING PARTNERSHIP:

CERAFILTEC have recently announced a new and exciting partnership with Osmoflo Water Management! The collaboration will 'leverage expertise in high-performance ceramic membrane solutions and innovative, sustainable water and wastewater management to deliver superior treatment solutions across Australia and New Zealand.’

The agreement will allow Osmoflo to further incorporate Cerafiltec’s advanced ceramic products into its water treatment systems across both areas.

Within the partnership, Osmoflo will aim to provide customers alternative solutions to the conventional polymeric membranes which come with limitations of lifespan, maintenance issues and clear environment concerns.

Osmoflo’s General Manager of Strategic Growth, Scott Chalmers recently expressed his excitement regarding the partnership and said

“We look forward to providing drinking water plant upgrades, effluent recycling options and industrial water treatment solutions to our customers and clients using CERAFILTEC’s advanced ceramic membranes.”

ZwitterCo Funding

Another extremely positive announcement from ZwitterCo this week, who has secured $58.4m in funding led by Evok Innovations . ZwitterCo and their award-winning technology will be supported by Evok to ‘accelerate ZwitterCo’s mission to unlock the potential of unconventional water sources, such as industrial wastewaters and more challenging surface waters or process streams, to meet the massive water demands of industries that underpin a low-carbon future.’

CEO Alex Rappaport said:

?“This funding will allow us to rapidly scale our breakthrough membrane technology, empowering industries to reliably and affordably access unconventional water resources while ensuring the water used or recycled in these industries meets the highest purity standards.”

The funding from leading sustainability-minded investors certainly recognizes the pressing challenges of decarbonization and water scarcity, encouraging a more sustainable water industry in the future.

Perspectives from a specialist!

We are thrilled to share to be able to share some of the key points from a greatly insightful conversation with Will Downie Managing Director of Carbon Activated.

How did you initially begin within the water sector?

  • Biological Sciences Degree?

  • Left south Africa to the UK and started focusing/ working in industry within biopharma and life science products.
  • Whist managing a life science manufacturing company a friend introduced me to a group that was purchasing an activated carbon company that made activated carbon for water purification as well as other industries. They were looking for a new CEO. This was my entry point into the industry which I have now been part of for nearly 20 years and the rest as they say is history!

Can you provide us with an overview of Carbon Activated Europe?

Carbon Activated Europe is the European arm of Carbon Activated Corporation a global manufacturer and supplier of activated carbon and related services. We take care of our customers and markets in EMEA.

Activated carbon is “the tried and tested adsorbent” with the first documented use of activated carbon dating back to 3750 BC by the Egyptians.

  • The most recognised and well-known application is in water purification.
  • Second largest applications are in air and gas. Activated carbon can filter unwanted smells and unsafe and unwanted components, right through to purifying hydrogen and its use in the manufacturing of nitrogen.?
  • For Carbon Activated Europe, about 40% of our targets are in the water industry and another 40% on the air and gas industry.?
  • There are over 1000 applications for activated carbon - which ensures that no two days or customers’ requirements are the same. It is constantly interesting.

Can you dive deeper into how your products are used within the water industry specifically?

  • Large water treatment utilities use activated carbon for purifying drinking water.
  • Another common use by utility companies is the removal of chlorine and chloramines in drinking water?following disinfection.
  • Within industry to filter and clean water for reuse and or discharge after use to levels that meet regulatory discharge consent levels which are generally set higher than the original quality of the water industry receives.

What are the main industry challenges facing Carbon Activated as a company?

  • Water is scarce and its provision and reuse is probably one of the most prominent global issues.
  • The growing population and climate change means countries, companies and consumers are having to utilise water much more effectively.?
  • The growing awareness of PFAS (manufactured “forever chemicals” that do not breakdown naturally over time) and its related human and animal health issues. PFAS are being found in many of our water sources the world over, which now require filtration and clean ups from efficient and effective solutions such as Activated Carbon. The US introduced very stringent federal regulation on this last month and Europe is likely to follow suit with its own tougher regulation in the pipeline.

What are the other methods of water treatment and water purification??

  • Lots of other technologies from Ion exchange to membranes and bioreactors.
  • Many are complementary to one another and are often used in sequence.?
  • The beauty of activated carbon is it is extremely versatile and easy to deploy. It can be used easily and cost effectively virtually anywhere as either the main filtration method or as a pre-filtration or post filtration process together with other technologies.

Activated carbon is super-efficient and is the proven great all-rounder.

After all, not one size t-shirt fits all!?
